Chapter 4 - The Fortress Breached

Night fell across the estate like a thick, black shroud. Outside, the autumn wind howled through the ancient oak trees, rattling the reinforced glass windows of the upper floor. Clara sat by the fireplace, her knees drawn up to her chest, watching Roman clean and inspect an array of tactical weapons laid out on the mahogany dining table.
The silence was suffocating. Every ticking second brought them closer to the midnight deadline Marco Marcone had delivered via encrypted text to Roman's private line: Bring the girl to Pier 42 alone, or collect her brother in pieces from the river.
""You can't go alone,"" Clara spoke up, breaking the quiet. ""It's suicide. Even I know that.""
""I never go anywhere alone,"" Roman replied without looking up from the slide of his weapon. ""Victor will have two sniper teams positioned on the industrial cranes across the pier. Four tactical squads will block the highway exits. The moment I confirm your brother’s pulse, Pier 42 becomes a slaughterhouse.""
""And if they expect the snipers?"" Clara challenged, standing up and walking toward him. ""They anticipated your security at the ballroom. They anticipated your guards at the hospital. What makes you think they haven't anticipated this?""
Roman paused, his fingers resting on the cold steel of the magazine. He looked up at her, studying the sharp intelligence burning behind her fear. ""You think like a strategist, little bird.""
""I think like someone who doesn't want another person to die for my family's mistakes,"" she countered softly, stopping just across the table from him.
Suddenly, the lights flickered once. Twice.
Then, total darkness enveloped the room.
The emergency generators did not kick in. The heavy mechanical hum of the estate’s ventilation instantly died, leaving only the deafening howl of the wind outside.
""Roman?"" Clara’s voice was barely a whisper.
In a fraction of a second, an iron grip caught her wrist and yanked her down behind the reinforced steel desk. Roman’s body covered hers, heavy and warm, shielding her completely.
""Stay flat,"" Roman hissed in her ear. ""The power grid wasn't cut from the outside. The main junction box is inside the basement perimeter.""
The traitor.
Before Clara could draw breath, the sharp crack of suppressed automatic gunfire erupted downstairs. Screams, curses, and the sound of breaking wood shattered the silence of the fortress. The house was under direct assault.
""Victor!"" Roman called into his tactical earpiece. Only static answered. ""Victor, report!""
A heavy thud shook the hallway outside the master suite. Heavy boots approached, rapid and disciplined. Roman slid two fresh magazines into his tactical vest, his expression turning to stone. He reached down, grabbing a compact 9mm handgun from the table and shoving it into Clara’s hands.
""Do you know how to use this?"" he demanded.
""No!"" she whispered in panic.
""Finger off the trigger until you are ready to destroy whatever is in front of you,"" Roman instructed, his voice steely and calm amidst the chaos. ""Rack the slide, point, and squeeze. If the door opens and it isn't me, you empty the magazine. Understand?""
Clara gripped the heavy metal, nodding frantically. ""Yes.""
""Good."" Roman stood, moving with the lethal grace of a shadow toward the double doors.
A sudden explosion blasted the heavy doors off their hinges, sending splinters of wood and plaster flying through the air. Roman fired instantly, two precise double-taps cutting down the first two masked men who breached the threshold. Smoke and the blinding flash of muzzle fire illuminated the room in violent strobe bursts.
Another mercenary lunged through the doorway, tackling Roman against the wall. The gun flew from Roman’s grip, skittering across the floor toward Clara.
Clara watched in horror as the intruder pulled a combat knife, driving the blade toward Roman’s neck. Roman caught the attacker's wrist, muscles straining, veins bulging against his neck as the blade hovered an inch above his jugular. The intruder was massive, pinning Roman with pure momentum.
Clara didn't think. Instinct took over. She scrambled across the floor, grabbed the fallen handgun with both hands, raised it, and aimed at the attacker’s side.
Click.
The safety was on.
The intruder heard the click and turned his masked head toward her, his eyes widening behind the balaclava. He shifted his weight to kick the gun from her hands.
That split-second distraction was all Roman needed.
With a roar of primal fury, Roman twisted the man’s arm, breaking the wrist with a sickening snap. The knife dropped. Roman drove his elbow into the man’s throat, followed by a devastating knee to the chest that sent the mercenary crashing lifelessly to the floor.
Panting heavily, Roman retrieved his weapon. Blood trickled down his temple from a flying splinter, but his eyes were blazing with savage fire. He looked at Clara, who was trembling violently on her knees, the gun still raised in her shaking hands.
He stepped toward her, gently taking the weapon from her fingers and flicking the safety off.
""You didn't run,"" Roman murmured, pulling her up by the waist until she was pressed against him.
May you like
""I tried to shoot him,"" she whispered, her voice choking on tears of shock.
Roman pulled her face into his chest, wrapping his arms around her tightly as gunfire echoed from the lower levels. ""You saved my life, little bird. Now it's my turn to return the favor.""
