Chapter 44 - The Dead Man’s Signature

Catherine recognized the signature immediately.
“That’s Samuel’s.”
Roman stared at the scanned court petition.
“You’re sure?”
“I watched him sign hundreds of documents.”
Marcus enlarged the handwriting.
“The filing used a verified digital identity created eight years ago.”
Catherine shook her head.
“Samuel died before computers filled rooms, let alone pockets.”
Clara paced.
“So somebody built a legal ghost.”
Adrian asked, “Why?”
Marcus answered.
“Bellweather.”
The company charter contained a strange succession clause.
Control transferred according to the written authorization of founder Samuel Moretti Bell.
If a verified directive appeared, corporate trustees were legally required to follow it until challenged.
Roman looked toward Catherine.
“Someone preserved his identity to control the company.”
Catherine whispered, “Luca.”
“No,” Clara said.
Everyone turned.
“Too obvious.”
Roman watched her.
She continued.
“Luca used force. Elena used manipulation. Vincent used revenge. This is administrative.”
Marcus frowned.
“Administrative?”
“Court filings. Ownership transfers. Guardianship petitions. Corporate trusts.”
Adrian understood.
“Someone who doesn’t need guns.”
Catherine’s face changed.
“There was one other person.”
Roman leaned forward.
“Who?”
“Samuel’s lawyer.”
“Name?”
“Margaret Vale.”
Marcus searched.
Margaret Vale.
Deceased.
Her daughter, Rebecca Vale, inherited the law practice.
Age sixty-one.
Specialist in trusts, estates, and corporate succession.
Board member of three national child welfare organizations.
Clara whispered, “There.”
Roman looked at the photograph.
Elegant.
Gray hair.
Kind smile.
The sort of woman nobody would notice entering a courthouse.
Marcus dug deeper.
Rebecca Vale had represented Elena Gaines.
She had also structured Luca Moretti’s security acquisitions.
And years earlier, she had handled Roman’s restructuring when he transferred illegal-linked assets into legitimate boards.
Roman went still.
“She worked for me.”
Clara stared.
“You know her?”
“I met her twice.”
Marcus swore.
“She designed parts of the trusts protecting Sofia and Antonio.”
Roman’s face drained.
For once, fear defeated anger.
“She knows everything.”
Where the children went to school.
Which assets they inherited.
Who became guardian if Roman and Clara died.
Which medical institutions held family records.
Every legal vulnerability.
Catherine sat slowly.
“Margaret knew Samuel’s secrets.”
Roman looked at her.
“Would she have known about Bellweather?”
“Yes.”
Marcus’s system alerted.
Rebecca Vale’s office had closed permanently that morning.
Staff dismissed.
Servers wiped.
Private jet departed three hours earlier.
Destination filed as Geneva.
Clara shook her head.
“Too easy.”
Roman agreed.
“She wants us looking overseas.”
Rhodes called airport security.
The jet had taken off.
But Rebecca was not aboard.
A passenger boarded using her passport.
Different woman.
Decoy.
Then the estate alarms sounded.
Roman grabbed Clara.
Marcus checked the screen.
Not intrusion.
Fire.
Smoke rose from the old archive wing.
They ran.
Sprinklers activated.
Security teams evacuated staff.
The fire centered on Antonio Duca’s historic records.
Roman stopped outside the burning corridor.
“She’s destroying documents.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Copies exist.”
Clara stared at the smoke.
“Then the fire isn’t for destruction.”
Roman turned.
“What?”
“Distraction.”
They both said it together.
“The children.”
Roman ran.
Sofia and Antonio were inside the reinforced family safe room.
Door sealed.
Biometric system active.
Roman pressed his hand against the reader.
ACCESS DENIED.
Marcus tried override.
Denied.
Clara entered her code.
Denied.
Then the wall monitor activated.
Rebecca Vale appeared.
She was inside the safe room.
Standing behind Sofia and Antonio.
Roman’s world stopped.
Sofia looked furious rather than frightened.
Antonio held Frederick the dinosaur.
Rebecca smiled pleasantly.
“Roman.”
“How did you get inside?”
“I wrote the trust that paid for this room.”
Roman’s fists clenched.
“Open the door.”
“No.”
Clara moved toward the camera.
“What do you want?”
Rebecca looked at her.
“Freedom from inherited men.”
Clara frowned.
Rebecca continued.
“My mother served Samuel. Samuel served truth. Antonio buried them both under layers of violence and secrecy.”
Catherine appeared behind Roman.
Rebecca saw her.
“Aunt Catherine.”
Catherine froze.
Roman turned.
“Aunt?”
Catherine’s face went white.
Rebecca smiled.
“You never told them?”
Catherine whispered, “Rebecca is Samuel’s daughter.”
Silence.
Roman stared.
Catherine began crying.
“I didn’t know she survived.”
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“Yes, you did.”
“No.”
“You abandoned me.”
Catherine stepped toward the screen.
“Rebecca—”
“You chose the Duca child.”
Roman realized.
Catherine had protected him.
Rebecca believed Catherine chose Roman over her own stepdaughter.
This was not merely money.
It was abandonment preserved for sixty years.
Rebecca placed one hand on Sofia’s shoulder.
Roman moved closer to the door.
“If you hurt them—”
“I won’t.”
Her eyes met his.
“I’m going to take them away from the Duca name.”
Clara’s voice became steel.
“They are my children.”
Rebecca smiled sadly.
“So was I.”
May you like
Then the safe room emergency escape tunnel opened behind her.
And before Roman could break through the reinforced door, Rebecca disappeared underground with Sofia and Antonio.
