Chapter 22 - Clara Walks Into the Trap

The coordinates led to an abandoned theater.
Roman hated the plan.
Marcus hated it.
Adrian hated it.
Leo called it “insane.”
Clara went anyway.
Not alone.
Technically.
She wore a wire woven into the clasp of her necklace.
Roman’s teams surrounded the theater from three blocks away.
Rhodes had federal agents positioned nearby.
Clara entered through the front doors at midnight.
Dust floated beneath broken chandeliers.
The stage lights suddenly turned on.
Daniel Kessler stood center stage.
Alive.
Bandaged.
Smiling.
“You really came.”
“You threatened a hospital.”
“And Roman allowed this?”
“Roman doesn’t allow me to do anything.”
Kessler laughed.
“That must be difficult for him.”
“You have no idea.”
Behind the listening equipment, Roman almost smiled.
Kessler gestured toward a chair.
Clara remained standing.
“You wanted me here.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Roman listens to you.”
“Sometimes.”
“I need him to destroy the ledger.”
“No.”
Kessler studied her.
“You didn’t even ask why.”
“I know why.”
“Do you?”
“You spent years turning your family pain into permission.”
His smile vanished.
Clara continued.
“Your grandfather funded violence. Your mother suffered because Antonio Duca persecuted Elias. Both things are true.”
“You know nothing about my mother.”
“No. But I know what grief looks like when someone keeps feeding it.”
Kessler stepped closer.
“You think love changed Roman.”
“It did.”
“That man has killed people.”
“Yes.”
Kessler seemed surprised by her answer.
Clara did not flinch.
“I am not pretending Roman is innocent. That is your obsession. Innocent or guilty. Hero or monster. Victim or villain.”
She shook her head.
“People are more complicated than the story you built your life around.”
Kessler’s hand tightened.
Behind the surveillance van, Roman whispered, “Enough. Pull her out.”
Marcus stopped him.
“She’s getting him talking.”
Kessler walked toward Clara.
“My grandfather died disgraced.”
“Your grandfather died rich.”
“My mother died hating the Duca name.”
“And now how many mothers hate yours?”
That landed.
Kessler slapped her.
Roman surged toward the van door.
Marcus physically blocked him.
“Boss.”
“I will kill him.”
“And get Clara killed.”
Roman stopped.
Onstage, Clara tasted blood.
She looked back at Kessler.
“That felt like winning?”
His composure cracked.
“You think you are brave because Roman will come through those doors.”
“No.”
Clara smiled faintly.
“I know he won’t.”
Kessler frowned.
She touched her necklace.
“Because while you were watching me, federal agents were entering your offshore data center.”
Kessler went pale.
Roman turned toward Rhodes.
She smiled.
The operation had worked.
Kessler grabbed Clara.
Gun against her throat.
Roman’s control disappeared.
“Move!”
Teams breached.
Windows shattered.
Kessler dragged Clara backstage.
She drove her heel into his knee.
He cursed.
The gun shifted.
Clara slammed her head backward into his face.
The weapon fired into the ceiling.
She ran.
Kessler caught her coat.
Then Roman appeared.
He had ignored every order.
Of course.
Kessler raised the gun.
Roman stopped.
Clara twisted suddenly.
The training Marcus had given her over the past weeks took over.
She trapped Kessler’s wrist.
Dropped her weight.
The pistol fell.
Roman kicked it away.
Kessler stared at Clara in disbelief.
“You—”
She punched him.
Hard.
He collapsed.
Roman looked at her.
Clara shook out her hand.
“That hurt.”
Roman pulled her into his arms.
“You are never doing that again.”
She pressed her face against his chest.
“Probably true.”
Federal agents flooded backstage.
Rhodes handcuffed Kessler personally.
Daniel looked at Roman.
“This isn’t over.”
Roman approached.
For years, everyone expected violence when Roman Duca was threatened.
This time, he did something far worse to Daniel Kessler.
He smiled.
“Yes,” Roman said quietly.
May you like
“It is.”
And he walked away without touching him.
