Chapter 7 - The Viper at the Gates

The silence that followed was suffocating. Claire stepped backward, her head spinning as the foundational agony of the past five years threatened to collapse under the weight of his confession.

Could it be true? The cruelty that had destroyed her youth, the endless nights crying alone in a dingy studio apartment in Seattle while holding her swollen belly... had it all been a twisted, barbaric act of salvation?

"You should have told me," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "You should have trusted me!"

"You were twenty-one years old, Claire! You were innocent! If you had known, your eyes would have given you away!" Vincent took an agonizing step toward her, his hands raised in surrender. "If they had suspected for a second that you still meant the world to me, you wouldn't have made it to the state line! And then..." His voice cracked, his eyes dropping to the floor. "And then you vanished. You vanished so completely that not even my best intelligence operatives could find you."

"Because I didn't want to be found by a monster," Claire whispered, tears finally escaping her lashes.

Before Vincent could reply, the heavy mahogany doors of the study burst open. Luca ran into the foyer, his face grim, clutching a black leather folder.

"Boss. We have a problem."

Vincent’s posture snapped back into the ruthless Mafia Don in an instant. The raw, vulnerable man vanished behind a mask of lethal granite. "Speak."

"Valenti sent a courier. Left it at the downtown club." Luca opened the folder, revealing an 8x10 photograph.

Claire caught a glimpse and felt the room tilt violently.

It was a photograph of Lily. Taken not even an hour ago, through the glass of the sunroom at the back of the Moretti estate. Across Lily’s forehead in the photo, a red crosshair had been drawn in dry-erase marker. Attached was a handwritten note: *A pretty little bird for the King's cage. Let's see if she flies or falls. 24 hours, Moretti. Surrender the docks, or I collect my prize.*

"He has a sniper on the ridge," Luca said, his voice grim. "The perimeter team is sweeping, but Valenti knows she's your blood."

A chilling, deathly stillness washed over Vincent. The temperature in the foyer seemed to drop below freezing. Claire watched in sheer terror as the man she once knew disappeared entirely, replaced by the mythical, merciless devil that ruled the Chicago underworld.

"Luca," Vincent spoke, his voice dead and terrifyingly quiet.

"Yes, Don Moretti?"

"Call every capo. Call every soldier. Cancel all business at the port." Vincent slowly turned toward the large glass windows overlooking the sprawling grounds. "Tell them Don Valenti has broken the sacred law. Tonight, there will be no negotiations. Bring me his head on a silver platter, or don't bother coming back."
