Chapter 11 - A Father's Vow

The bunker alarms blared instantly, red emergency strobes bathing the room in crimson light.
Julianna stumbled backward, cursing vilely, raising the gun to aim directly at Lily’s bed. "You stupid bitch!"
Claire threw herself across the couch, shielding Lily with her entire body. "NO!"
The blast door slammed open with the force of an explosion.
Vincent appeared like a demon summoned from the depths of hell. His eyes were wide, feral, and completely unhinged. In a fraction of a second, he assessed the situation—the blood, the shattered glass, Julianna with the gun aimed at his family.
He moved faster than humanly possible. Vincent caught Julianna’s wrist in an iron grip, twisting it until bone snapped with a sickening *crack*. Julianna screamed, the pistol clattering to the floor. Without breaking momentum, Vincent slammed her against the steel wall, his forearm pressed against her throat, lifting her clear off the ground.
"You touched my sanctuary," Vincent growled, his voice a guttural roar that rattled the bunker. "You dared bring a weapon near my daughter."
"Vincent... wait!" Claire cried out, clutching a crying, terrified Lily to her chest. "She has the recorder! She said you traded me for your crown!"
Vincent’s gaze flicked to the silver recorder lying on the carpet. His eyes darkened with infinite pain.
"She edited the tape, Claire," Vincent said, never taking his eyes off his gasping, dying cousin. "Play the full tape, Julianna. Tell her what I said next."
Julianna gagged, her face turning purple beneath Vincent's crushing grip.
Vincent reached down with his free hand, picking up the recorder, hitting rewind, and holding it up. The audio played again, past the cut:
*“The girl means nothing to me. If the council demands her removal to secure my seat as Don, I will discard her tonight. The Moretti bloodline will not fall for a woman...”*
Then the audio continued, Vincent’s voice turning savage and murderous on the recording:
*“...And if any man in this room breathes near her border, if any of you so much as whispers her name in the dark, I will slaughter your wives, burn your sons, and feed your ashes to the dogs. She leaves Chicago alive and untouched, or this syndicate burns to the ground tonight.”*
May you like
Claire gasped, the breath rushing back into her lungs like a tidal wave.
Vincent had not chosen his crown over her. He had traded his soul to the devil to buy her survival.
