Chapter 5 - A Fortress of Glass

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan like a bruised peach, casting long, sharp shadows across the penthouse windows of The Drake. Claire had not slept a wink. She sat curled on the edge of the mattress, watching Lily sleep, clutching her passport in her trembling jacket pocket. She had planned to fly back to Seattle, to the quiet life she had painstakingly rebuilt in a small coastal town. But the moment she opened the bedroom door, reality slammed shut like an iron cell.

Four armed men in tailored charcoal suits stood in the corridor, MPX submachine guns discreetly slung beneath their jackets. At the center of the living area stood Vincent, sipping black coffee, freshly shaved and wearing an impeccably tailored black suit. The aura of absolute power radiated from him, commanding and suffocating.

"Pack her things," Vincent commanded without looking up from his tablet. "We leave in ten minutes."

"I am not going anywhere with you!" Claire's voice rose, vibrating with indignant fury. "You have no legal right to detain us, Vincent! I am a free citizen, and Lily is my daughter!"

Vincent set his cup down on the marble counter. The ceramic clicked sharply against the stone. He walked toward her, each step measured, predatory, until he stood inches away. The scent of sandalwood, expensive tobacco, and pure danger enveloped her, triggering a treacherous wave of sense-memory that made her stomach twist.

"You think this is about rights, Claire?" Vincent asked, his voice a low, terrifying rasp. "Don Valenti knows you exist. He knows a child exists. By noon, every cartel, every corrupt cop, and every hitman who wants a bounty on my head will know that my greatest weakness is breathing the same air as me."

Claire flinched. "She is not your weakness! You gave up the right to call her anything the day you threw me out for Elena!"

At the mention of Elena’s name, a muscle jumped violently in Vincent’s jaw. His eyes turned into chips of black ice. "You know nothing about what happened that night."

"I know what you said to my face!" Claire hissed, tears of bitter humiliation threatening to spill. "You looked me in the eyes and told me you never loved me! You told me Elena had your heart, that I was just a naive distraction, a little stray you took pity on! Did you think five years of silence would erase those words?"

Vincent looked at her, his throat bobbing as he fought against a mountain of unspoken agony. He reached out, his hand hovering near her cheek, wanting nothing more than to wipe away the phantom tears, but he forced his fingers into a tight fist, dropping it to his side.

"Think whatever you need to hate me, Claire," he whispered harshly. "Despise me. Curse my name. But you will get in the car. Because if you walk out that front door alone, Lily won’t survive until sunset."

Before Claire could scream at him, the bedroom door opened. Lily stood in her little sneakers, clutching her stuffed pink bunny.

"Mommy? Are we going on an adventure?" Lily asked innocently.

May you like

Vincent immediately shifted his posture, hiding the cold brutality behind a composed facade. He knelt down before the little girl again, offering a faint, reassuring smile. "Yes, little bird. We're going to a house with a very big garden. Would you like to see it?"

Lily looked at Claire for permission. Trapped by the cruelest man she had ever known, Claire swallowed her screams and nodded with a broken heart. "Yes, baby. We're going."
