Chapter 6 - Echoes of Betrayal

The Moretti estate in Lake Forest was not a home; it was a compound. Surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls topped with razor-sharp ornamental spikes, thermal cameras, and twenty-four-hour patrols, it was a palace built to withstand a siege.

When the convoy pulled through the iron gates, Claire felt the breath leave her lungs. Five years ago, she had fled this very estate in the dead of night, bleeding internally from heartbreak, rain soaking her clothes as she slipped past the guards who had looked the other way out of pity. Now, she was returning in chains of circumstance.

"Take Miss Lily to the sunroom. Have Mrs. Gable prepare hot chocolate and pastries," Vincent ordered as soon as they stepped into the grand marble foyer.

"Yes, Don Moretti," a maid bowed nervously, gently coaxing Lily toward the bright, glass-paneled wing of the manor. Lily hesitated, but Claire gave her an encouraging smile. "Go ahead, sweetheart. Mommy needs to speak with Vincent for a moment."

Once Lily’s laughter echoed faintly down the corridor, Claire turned on Vincent like a wounded lioness.

"Why did you bring me back here?" she demanded, walking straight up to him, jabbing an accusatory finger against his broad chest. "To torture me? To parade your empire in front of me while your mistress lurks in the background?"

Vincent didn't move. He absorbed every strike, his eyes burning with an intense, agonizing hunger as he looked down at her flushed, beautiful face. "Elena is dead, Claire."

Claire froze. The name hung in the cold, opulent foyer like an executioner's blade. "What?"

"She died four years ago," Vincent said flatly, though the shadows under his eyes betrayed the ghosts that haunted him. "She was never my mistress. She was never my lover."

Claire let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Do you think I'm stupid, Vincent? You stood in our bedroom, right by that fireplace, and told me you had slept with her! You gave me a signed divorce paper and told me to get out before you had your men drag me into the street!"

"Because she was wearing a wire, Claire!" Vincent roared, the sudden eruption of his voice shattering the silence of the mansion like glass.

His composure cracked completely. He grabbed Claire by the shoulders, his grip desperate, trembling with an intensity that shocked her to her core.

"The Russian syndicate had infiltrated my council through Elena’s family," Vincent breathed, his voice raw and ragged. "They knew I had married you. They threatened to skin you alive while forcing me to watch if I didn't hand over the southern shipping lanes. The only way to save your life was to make them believe you were completely worthless to me! I had to make the entire world believe you were a discarded whore so nobody would follow you!"

Claire stared at him, her lips parted in sheer horror and disbelief. "No... no, that’s a lie. You’re lying to manipulate me—"

"I spent five years hunting every single bastard involved in that plot!" Vincent snarled, tears glistening in the corners of his ruthless eyes. "I burned their empires to ash! And every single night, Claire, every single goddamn night for five years, I sat in that empty bedroom drinking myself to death, wishing I had died instead of having to say those words to you!"
