Chapter 80 - The Fracture of Command

General Henderson’s eyes did not waver from mine, but the silence between us stretched until the idling roar of the Black Hawk engines felt like the only sound left on the planet.

The three Inspector General officers behind him did not draw their sidearms, but their hands shifted subtly toward their holsters. Major Miller noticed it immediately. Without a word of command, the four SRT operators who had walked through the fire with me in the Sugarloaf tunnels adjusted their firing angles, their M4s casually but deliberately drifting toward the General’s personal security detachment.

A cold, lethal standoff was crystallizing in the grey Virginia fog.

"General," Miller said, his voice dropping into the low, gravelly register he used before kicking in a breach door. "My orders came directly from the Provost Marshal General under statutory authority Title 10. Captain Vance is under my protective custody as the primary witness and investigating officer. All evidence seized on this site remains under CID chain of custody."

Henderson exhaled slowly, a plume of white steam rising into the freezing air. "Lower your weapons, Major. Nobody is disputing your authority. But this investigation has breached the perimeter of national strategic continuity. What is on that drive, Captain Vance, is not simply evidence of financial fraud or illicit arms procurement."

"I know what it is," I said, stepping between Miller’s men and the General, my hand resting firmly on the encrypted flash drive inside my tactical vest. "It’s the list of everyone who traded their integrity to keep their stars and their committee seats. It’s the reason Denise felt confident enough to stand in my father’s house and treat the Uniform Code of Military Justice like a joke. She thought she was untouchable because the rot went all the way to the top of the E-Ring."

"You have no idea what it takes to keep this military functional in an era of asymmetric dissolution," Henderson said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that only Catherine, Miller, and I could hear. "The Consortium was an attempt to maintain operational readiness when Congress was slashing logistics to the bone. Your mother went too far. She turned a strategic tool into an empire of personal leverage."

"She didn't go too far, Henderson," I said, looking at Elizabeth, who was watching us with a faint, mocking smile from beneath her tangled gray hair. "She just showed you what the monster you created looks like when it takes off the uniform."

"Take her to the high-security brig at Fort Leavenworth," Henderson commanded, turning his back on his former colleague. "Transport her under blackout protocol. No communication with external counsel until the Provost Marshal completes the preliminary treason indictment."

Two CID agents stepped forward to take Elizabeth by the arms. As they hauled her toward the second Black Hawk, she twisted her neck back toward me, her cold, dead eyes boring into mine.

*"You haven't won, Hannah,"* she hissed, her voice cutting through the turbine whine. *"Read the file from 1998. Look at the name of the man who signed your real father’s execution order at the Pentagon. It wasn't me. It was the man standing in front of you."*
