Chapter 71 - The Shadow on the Threshold

Miller appeared in the doorway, carbine raised, his face smeared with soot but his eyes victorious. Behind him was Catherine, holding a secure satellite tablet displaying the global news feeds.

"It’s over," Catherine announced, her voice echoing through the ruined study. "The Attorney General just issued an emergency arrest warrant for Denise Vance and the entire board of the Consortium. The 82nd Airborne is currently surrounding the private airfield in Dubai where her Gulfstream was forced to land. Marcus... your assets have been frozen by federal marshals."

Marcus slumped against the balcony doors, sliding down to the floor, his head in his hands, completely broken.

Thomas looked up at Catherine, his face twisted in a desperate plea for redemption. "Catherine... my sweet girl... tell your sister. Tell her I love you both. We can rebuild this. The family name... we can fix this..."

Catherine looked down at the man who had abandoned our mother to die in an institution. There was no hatred in her eyes; there was something far worse: complete, devastating indifference.

"There is no Vance family anymore, Thomas," Catherine said quietly. "There is only what Mom left behind."

Outside, through the shattered balcony doors, the thunderous roar of helicopter rotors shook the mansion’s foundation. Three massive Sikorsky MH-60 Black Hawks, bearing the distinct markings of the United States Army Military Police Special Investigations Division, hovered low over the front lawn, their powerful spotlights illuminating the shattered study in blinding daylight brilliance.

Troops began fast-roping onto the grass—real military police, genuine law enforcement answering the legitimate constitutional chain of command, backed by the irrefutable evidence we had broadcast to the world.

Miller exhaled a long, shuddering breath, lowering his weapon. "We did it, Hannah. It’s finally over. The MP command is securing the perimeter. We’re cleared."

I looked down at Marcus, then at Thomas, who was still weeping on the floorboards. The war that had begun with three clicks of an emergency distress key in a cold dining room had ended in the ruin of the men who had orchestrated it.

I clicked my weapon’s safety switch to *safe*, letting the rifle hang from its sling.

Then, the satellite tablet in Catherine’s hands emitted a sudden, sharp, high-frequency tone.

The screen didn't display the global news feed anymore. It was hijacked by an incoming, prioritized military data stream—a signal originating not from the Pentagon, not from Dubai, and not from the Phoenix carrier.

The coordinates attached to the transmission were localized: *LOUDOUN COUNTY, VIRGINIA. DISTANCE: 0.2 MILES.*

Catherine’s breath caught in her throat. "Hannah... look at this."

I took the tablet. On the screen was a live video feed from an encrypted drone camera hovering directly above our estate’s perimeter woods.

Parked along the tree line, completely masked by thermal camouflage that had blinded both Miller and the arriving military police helicopters, sat an unmarked, heavily armored command transport.

A synthetic voice crackled through the tablet’s internal speakers, cold, mechanical, and intimately familiar:

*"You fought well, Captain Vance. Your mother would have been proud of how efficiently you neutralized Denise’s amateur network."*

The camera zoomed in on the open rear hatch of the armored transport.

Sitting inside, surrounded by a battery of high-end tactical terminals, was an elderly woman whose face was heavily scarred on the left side, breathing through a portable medical respirator.

My heart stopped. The world around me seemed to tilt on its axis.

The woman on the screen raised a frail, trembling hand toward the lens, wearing the exact silver signet ring that had been buried in an empty coffin seven years ago.

*"Did you really think,"* Elizabeth Vance whispered through the static, her cold eyes staring through the screen directly into mine, *"that Denise was the one running the Consortium?"*

May you like

Before I could breathe, before Catherine could scream, the tablet screen flashed a countdown timer:

**PROTOCOL ZEUS INITIATED: DETONATION IN 60 SECONDS.**
