Chapter 26 - The Unbroken Recording

"He's lying," Miller’s voice cut through the room like a scalpel. She was kneeling by the opened safe behind the desk, her fingers flying over an external decryption terminal plugged into Thomas’s personal laptop. "Hannah, don't listen to him. Look at this."

Miller turned the laptop toward me.

On the screen was an unedited, high-definition audio-visual file recorded from a hidden pinhole camera inside the dining room of Whispering Pines—dated the exact night of my assault, timestamped twenty minutes before I had arrived home.

In the video, my father was sitting in his chair at the head of the dining table. His hands were trembling violently. Standing directly behind him was not Denise or Claire, but a tall, broad-shouldered man in civilian tactical clothes, pressing a silenced pistol into the base of my father’s neck.

Denise was standing across the room, speaking into a burner phone.

*"...She'll be here in ten minutes,"* Denise’s recorded voice echoed from the laptop speakers. *"Thomas wants the files from her military drive. If she refuses, Claire will provoke her. Robert—listen to me carefully."*

The camera zoomed slightly on my father's face. Tears were streaming silently down his cheeks. He tried to speak, but the man behind him drove the muzzle of the pistol viciously into his spine.

*"You say one word to warn her, Robert,"* Denise’s voice continued on the recording, cold and remorseless, *"and the sniper parked on the ridge takes her out before she reaches the porch. You sit there. You let Claire do what she needs to do to provoke her into drawing a weapon or giving up her credentials. If you open your mouth, Hannah dies tonight. Do you understand?"*

My father had closed his eyes, his entire body shaking, and nodded once—a desperate, shattered gesture to keep me alive.

The video cut out.

The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the whistling wind outside the shattered door.

I slowly lowered my carbine. All the burning hatred, all the venomous betrayal I had carried toward my father since that night, crumbled into dust, replaced by an icy, focused rage that terrified even Hayes.

"You staged it," I whispered, staring down at Thomas. "You made him watch because you knew if I saw him broken, I’d stop looking. You thought I would just run away."

Thomas’s grin finally vanished. The color drained from his face as he realized that the psychological cage he had spent two years constructing around my father had just been torn to shreds.

"You don't understand what you've walked into, Hannah," Thomas stammered, his bravado finally cracking. "I'm not the buyer. The server... the server is already transmitting."
