Chapter 73 - The Crater of Virginia

The shockwave hit us like an iron slab thrown against our spines.

Even fifty yards out, sliding down the wet, clay-slicked embankment toward the concrete mouth of the storm runoff culvert, the sheer concussive force of the thermobaric ignition tore the breath from my lungs. The historic Vance manor—two hundred years of ancestral prestige, stained with blood money, treason, and domestic cruelty—did not simply burn; it collapsed in upon itself with a deafening, thunderous roar that shook the very tectonic spine of the county.

A wall of flame and pulverized brick blasted outward into the night sky, engulfing the towering oaks of the western lawn in an instant inferno. The heat scorched the back of my tactical jacket, melting the synthetic nylon fibers against my shoulder plates. I threw Catherine down into the concrete opening of the drainage conduit, diving over her frame while Thomas Vance tumbled headlong into the muck at the bottom, screaming as gravel tore the skin from his face.

Above us, the sky rained down shards of slate roofing, molten copper gutters, and burning fragments of oil paintings that had hung in the dining room where Denise had struck me down only weeks ago.

"Stay down!" I bellowed over the roar of the collapsing mansion.

The concrete walls of the culvert groaned under the sudden displacement of thousands of tons of earth above. For five agonizing seconds, dust so thick it choked our throats blinded us completely. Then came the secondary explosions—the ruptured natural gas main feeding the estate roared to life, turning the crater where my childhood home had stood into a localized volcanic vent of hissing blue and orange fire.

"Hannah..." Catherine coughed violently, dragging her respirator mask over her mouth and nose. She wiped the soot from her eyes and held up her field tablet. The chassis had cracked, but the hardened military screen still flickered with faint phosphor luminescence. "Thermal scan... look."

I crawled to the mouth of the culvert, shielding my eyes from the blistering radiant heat of the crater.

Above the northern perimeter ridge, where the dense pine woods met the state highway, the thermal signature of Elizabeth Vance’s armored command pod was already retreating. It was moving under cover of the massive black smoke plume generated by the explosion, slipping beneath the radar ceiling of the inbound military police Black Hawks.

"She’s heading toward Route 15," I said, my voice hoarse from smoke and cold rage. "She knows the local police and the CID will converge exclusively on the crater site for the next fifteen minutes. She triggered the blast not just to kill us, but to blind the regional tracking network."

"Hannah... look at me," a voice gasped from the dark corner of the culvert.

I turned my weapon's tactical light toward Thomas. He was huddled against the slime-covered corrugated steel, clutching a dislocated shoulder. His white dress shirt was blackened, soaked in sewage and mud, his patrician dignity entirely stripped away.

"You knew," I whispered, stepping toward him, the barrel of my rifle dropping to center mass. "You knew she didn't die in the Black Sea. When Denise brought those offshore ledgers into the dining room, when she laughed at me while you poured yourself another drink... you weren't acting out of fear of Denise. You were taking orders from Elizabeth."

"She... she told me it was the only way to protect the family name," Thomas sobbed, his teeth chattering uncontrollably from shock. "Denise... Denise was never my daughter, Hannah! She was the daughter of Elizabeth’s first handler in the Berlin station! When Elizabeth went underground to build the Consortium’s private supply lines, she left Denise with me as a watchdog. If I stepped out of line, if I went to CID... they would release the financial documents framing me for the treason!"

"So you let your legal wife fake her death, you let an operative pretend to be your stepdaughter, and you let them beat and frame your own flesh and blood?" Catherine said, her voice dripping with venomous disgust as she racked the bolt of her sidearm. "You deserve whatever Elizabeth has planned for you."

"She didn't plan for him to survive," I said coldly. "She detonated Zeus while he was inside the house. To Elizabeth, Thomas was just another loose thread to be cauterized by four thousand degrees of burning gas."

My radio crackled through the static of the blast zone. A voice broke through the interference—sharp, authoritative, cutting through the chaos.

*"Captain Vance! Captain Vance, this is Major Miller, lead element MP Ironclad! We have massive structural collapse at your primary grid! Report status! Hannah, do you copy?!"*

I keyed my mic. "Miller. We are alive. Northern drainage culvert, grid four-seven-niner. But listen to me carefully: cancel the search and rescue on the manor. The primary target is not dead. Repeat, the primary architect of the Consortium is mobile in a heavy armored command transport, moving north on Route 15 toward the Maryland line."

May you like

There was a dead silence on the channel for two seconds, followed by Miller’s sharp intake of breath. *"Say again, Captain? Denise Vance is already in transport to the federal brig—"*

"It wasn't Denise, Miller," I said, looking out at the burning hellscape that had consumed my past. "Denise was the decoy. The woman running the network is Elizabeth Vance. And she’s heading for the deep vault."
