Chapter 24 - THE ARCHITECT OF THE HEIST

Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, resting his hands casually on the arms. The ambient city lights flickered through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, casting long, dramatic shadows across the loft.
"You're surprised," Marcus noted, observing the hardened expression on my face. "You shouldn't be. Look at the timeline, Claire. Who do you think helped Eleanor set up that offshore trust back in nineteen-ninety-four? Who do you think engineered the original corporate shell that protected her four million dollars from Arthur's creditors?"
My breath hitched. "You."
"I was a young forensic accountant working for the Swiss fiduciary trust that managed Eleanor’s estate," Marcus said quietly, his eyes drifting toward the window as if recalling a distant memory. "I saw how brilliant she was—how she outmaneuvered Arthur at every turn. When she hid that ledger in the wainscot panel, she thought she was securing your future. But she didn't realize that the vault's combination and the Swiss deposit key were registered under a trustee code that I helped draft."
"So you waited," I said, stepping closer. "You watched my family suffer through decades of poverty, manipulation, and abuse while you quietly siphoned off our inheritance sixty thousand dollars at a time."
"I didn't just siphon it," Marcus corrected, his tone sharpening with defensive pride. "I invested it. I multiplied it through high-yield venture capital funds across Zurich and Singapore. That four million dollars Eleanor left behind? It's worth nearly twenty-two million today."
Mia stepped out from behind me, her voice trembling with righteous fury. "It wasn't yours to multiply! It belonged to my grandmother! It belonged to my mother! You lied to us every single day you pretended to be our friend!"
Marcus looked at Mia, his expression softening into something uncomfortably close to genuine affection. "Mia, everything I did was to secure a position where no one could ever hurt you or your mother again. Do you think Andrew or Evelyn or Arthur would have let you walk away with a clean slate? Wealth is armor, Mia. And I built the strongest armor in this city."
"Armor made of stolen money isn't protection," I snapped, pulling the leather-bound ledger from Mia's hands and slamming it down onto the mahogany table directly in front of him. "It's a cage."
Marcus stared down at the ledger, his jaw tightening. The facade of casual indifference began to fracture, revealing the calculating strategist underneath.
"What do you want, Claire?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a low, transactional hum. "Do you want the accounts frozen? Do you want a court-ordered restitution? Because if you try to drag this through the courts, the federal regulators will seize the entire portfolio under anti-money laundering statutes before you ever see a dime. The money vanishes into state coffers. Nobody wins."
"You're wrong," I said, leaning over the table so our eyes were level. "Someone does win. The truth wins."
Before Marcus could react, I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out a small, pre-programmed digital transmitter, and tossed it onto the table beside his laptop. The tiny red LED light on the device began to blink rapidly.

Marcus's eyes widened as he recognized the signal frequency. "What is that?"
"An open broadcast link," I said calmly. "The moment we walked through the door of this loft, the entire ledger, every wire transfer confirmation, and your signed confession were automatically uploaded to the federal prosecutor's office, the state financial commission, and every major news outlet in the country."
