Chapter 18 - A Mother’s Poison

The backlash was swift, toxic, and entirely predictable.

By Sunday evening, Evelyn had launched an all-out social media campaign. A sobbing video of her appeared on Facebook, framed carefully in front of the ornate mantlepiece at Elmhurst Lane.

*"I never thought I would live to see the day my own daughter would cast an elderly, grieving mother onto the streets,"* Evelyn wept to the camera, her voice quavering with theatrical sorrow. *"After sacrificing everything to raise her, after maintaining our family's ancestral home with my own meager resources... Claire has used legal technicalities to steal my home. Please, pray for our family during this trial of greed and betrayal."*

The comments blew up within hours. Distant cousins, high school acquaintances, and church members began flooding my phone with vitriolic messages.

*“How could you do this to your mother?”*

*“Family comes first, Claire. You should be ashamed.”*

*“God will judge you for throwing an old woman out.”*

Mia sat beside me on our living room couch, scrolling through the vile comments with an expression of cool, analytical detachment that made me intensely proud.

"Mom," Mia said, looking up from her tablet. "Are you going to let them control the narrative?"

"I don't care about their narrative, Mia," I sighed, rubbing my temples. "Let them talk. The law is on our side."

"No," Mia replied firmly, pulling up a folder on her laptop. "That’s not how the world works anymore. Grandma spent thirty years treating you like dirt, and she tried to make me feel invisible at that graduation party. Look at this."

Mia opened a video file. It was a high-definition recording taken by a catering assistant Andrew had hired for Chloe’s eighth-grade promotion party.

On the screen, Evelyn stood beside Andrew by the elaborate three-tiered cake. Her voice was unmistakably clear: *"Make sure the photographer takes down any pictures of Claire’s girl. We don't want anyone asking about Mia’s little scholarships. Tonight is about Chloe. Chloe is the only granddaughter who carries the Vance pedigree. Claire and her daughter can scrape by on their own."*

Then, the camera zoomed in on the pristine lettering on the cake: *To Chloe — Our Only Granddaughter, Our Only Pride.*

"Mia," I whispered, my throat tight. "Where did you get this?"

"The caterer was one of my AP Chemistry classmates," Mia said with a small, defiant smile. "He knew what they did. He saved the footage from the event cloud."

Mia looked at me with clear, fearless eyes. "Post it, Mom. Show them what their 'grieving matriarch' actually sounds like when she thinks nobody is holding her accountable."

I looked at the file. For thirty years, I had kept quiet to keep the peace. I had absorbed their slights, their insults, and their exclusion because I had been conditioned to believe that keeping a broken family intact was worth my own dignity.

I took the mouse from Mia's hand. "Upload it."
