Chapter 2 - The Morning of Illusion

By 8:45 AM the next morning, the Monarch Grand Ballroom was buzzing with expensive cologne, murmurs of corporate ambition, and the clinking of porcelain coffee cups. The room was designed to impress, featuring tiered seating, polished oak paneling, and a massive LED screen spanning the entire back wall of the stage.
Grant Whitmore stood backstage in a tailored navy suit, looking every bit the visionary CEO. His hair was perfectly styled, his smile radiant. He adjusted his silk tie—a gift from Sienna—and turned to his father, Douglas Whitmore, who was sipping espresso with an air of aristocratic boredom.
"Relax, son," Douglas said, clapping Grant on the shoulder. "Once this deal is locked in, Monarch Cove becomes our flagship. And as for Evelyn—remember what your mother said. Keep her in the background. Don't let her speak to the investors. She gets nervous and starts talking about her father's sentimentality."
Patricia Whitmore adjusted her diamond brooch, nodding in agreement. "She should consider herself lucky you keep her around, Grant. A woman of her limited business acumen would be lost without a Whitmore guiding her."
Mallory, Grant’s sister, scrolled through her phone while standing next to Sienna Blake. Sienna wore a sharp cream pantsuit that deliberately mirrored executive authority. "Don't worry," Mallory whispered with a smirk. "Evelyn is probably still in the penthouse crying over some old photo album of her dad. She never leaves the room when she's feeling insecure."
Grant smiled, feeling completely invincible. The door to the green room opened, and Evelyn walked in.
She wore a structured emerald-green blazer over a black silk dress. Her hair was swept back into a sleek chignon, and her expression was utterly serene. There was no trace of the wife who had stood trembling in the hallway yesterday.
"Evelyn," Grant said, stepping forward with a practiced, affectionate smile, dropping a perfunctory kiss on her cheek. "You look... composed. I thought you'd sleep in. Did you get my message last night? The board call ran late, but I came back to the suite around midnight. You were already asleep."
The audacity of the lie hung in the air like poison. Grant had spent the entire night in the guest suite with Sienna, sneaking back into the master bedroom only at dawn.

Evelyn looked straight into his hazel eyes, her gaze so steady that Grant momentarily faltered. "Yes, Grant," she said evenly. "I know exactly where you were. And today, everyone is going to find out."
Grant laughed nervously, patting her arm. "Still playing your little dramatic games. Go take your seat in the front row, darling. And remember—smile for the cameras."
