Chapter 9 - CONFRONTATION IN SILK

The ballroom instantly locked into a state of suspended animation. Two thousand of the wealthiest individuals in the country stepped back, forming an amphitheater of morbid curiosity around the central carpet.

Security guards moved to intercept Ryan, but Jonathan raised a single, calm finger.

*Let him approach.*

Ryan stopped five feet away from where Jonathan and I stood. His face was flushed crimson, his breathing ragged, his tuxedo jacket rumpled.

“Hannah,” Ryan breathed, his eyes dropping immediately to my protruding stomach before rising to lock onto mine. “Hannah, you look... incredible.”

I looked at him with an expression of complete, undisturbed coldness. “Mr. Mitchell. You are not on the guest list.”

Ryan offered a pathetic, rehearsed smile, stepping forward with his hands raised in surrender. “Hannah, please. Stop this ridiculous charade. I know you’re angry. I know I made mistakes. But you can’t let this man use you to destroy our family!”

A quiet murmur of shock rippled through the onlookers.

“Our family?” I asked, my voice ringing clear and steady across the ballroom. “The family you threw into freezing rain at midnight? The family you called worthless while your mistress laughed on your porch?”

Madison, who had rushed over to stand behind Ryan, squeaked in terror as the eyes of Seattle’s high society bored into her with burning contempt.

“I was under immense pressure!” Ryan shouted, desperation bleeding into his tone. “I had a breakdown! But that’s behind us now. You’re carrying my children, Hannah! Triplets! Three Mitchell boys! You cannot keep a father from his sons!”

The word *triplets* echoed across the ballroom like a bomb blast.

The socialites gasped, several women covering their mouths in astonishment. Up until that second, the public had only known I was pregnant—not that I was carrying three heirs at once.

Ryan lunged forward, reaching out a hand toward my belly. “Those boys belong with their father! You’re coming home with me tonight, Hannah! We will handle this in private!”

Before his fingers could come within two feet of my dress, Jonathan moved.

The motion was so fast, so fluid, it seemed almost unnatural. Jonathan stepped between us, his left hand catching Ryan by the throat with the crushing force of a steel vice.

Ryan let out a strangled wheeze, his feet nearly lifting off the floor as Jonathan backed him up against a marble pillar. The entire room went dead silent. Nobody called for security. Nobody dialed 911. Everyone knew who Jonathan Blackwell was.

“You will not touch her,” Jonathan whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with lethal intent. “You will not speak her name. And you will never, as long as you breathe air on this earth, refer to those children as Mitchells.”

Ryan clutched at Jonathan’s massive wrist, his eyes bulging as oxygen deserted his lungs. “They’re... mine... legally... mine...”

“They are Carter heirs,” Jonathan replied, leaning in until his lips were inches from Ryan’s ear, loud enough for the front row of dignitaries to hear every syllable. “And thirty minutes ago, Judge Harrison signed the emergency decree terminating your parental rights on grounds of aggravated felony domestic abuse and child endangerment. You have no rights, Ryan. You have no company. You have no money. And after tonight... you will have no freedom.”

Jonathan released his grip.

Ryan dropped to his knees, coughing violently, clutching his bruised throat on the pristine ballroom carpet.

Behind him, two King County Sheriff’s deputies stepped forward, pulling sets of steel handcuffs from their utility belts.

“Ryan Mitchell?” the senior deputy announced, reading from a laminated warrant. “You are under arrest for first-degree securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and aggravated domestic battery. Stand up and put your hands behind your back.”

Madison shrieked, backing away, but a female detective stepped in behind her. “Madison Lee? You are being detained as an accessory to grand larceny and money laundering. Don't make a scene.”

As the handcuffs clicked shut around Ryan’s wrists, he looked up at me from the floor, tears of humiliation and rage spilling down his cheeks.

“Hannah!” he screamed, his voice breaking into pathetic sobs as the officers dragged him backward toward the exit. “Hannah, please! Tell them! I loved you! Tell Blackwell to stop! Hannah!”

May you like

I did not flinch. I did not blink.

I simply took Jonathan’s arm, turned my back on the pathetic wretch who had tried to break me, and walked into the center of the ballroom to the thunderous, spontaneous applause of two thousand people.
