Chapter 3 - THE WOLVES AT THE GATES

The morning sun over Seattle did not bring warmth; it brought a cold, pale glare that sliced through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the private hospital wing. I sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows, a silver tray of fresh fruit and warm broth resting across my lap. For the first time in five years, the suffocating terror that had lived in my chest was gone. It had been replaced by a fierce, protective stillness.
My hand rested over the swell of my belly. Beneath my palm, three tiny flutters answered my touch. They were alive. They were safe.
Then my phone buzzed violently on the nightstand.
It wasn't my personal phone—Ryan had smashed that against the marble foyer before throwing me out into the storm. This was an encrypted smartphone Jonathan Blackwell’s assistant had delivered at dawn. The screen lit up with notifications from national entertainment outlets and social media alerts.
*“BREAKING: Rising Tech Heir Ryan Mitchell Speaks Out on Missing Wife—Fears She Has Fallen into the Clutches of Shady Financial Predators.”*
My stomach turned to ice as I tapped the screen. A live video feed popped up. Ryan was standing on the steps outside Mitchell Logistics headquarters, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit. His hair was artfully tousled, his eyes glistening with rehearsed tears, holding a press conference flanked by Madison. Madison wore a modest cream dress, dabbing at her eyes with a silk handkerchief.
“Hannah has been struggling with deep postpartum depression and severe paranoia,” Ryan choked out into a wall of microphones, his voice cracking with theatrical anguish. “She walked out into the storm after a minor disagreement. When I tried to bring her home, she had already vanished with an unidentified corporate rival. I don’t care about our marital disputes. I only care about my wife and our unborn baby. Hannah, if you are watching this, please come home. Don't let these predators use our child against us.”
Madison stepped up, placing a comforting hand on his arm for the cameras. “We just want her safe,” Madison whimpered. “Hannah, Ryan hasn’t slept all night. He loves you so much.”
A bitter, dry laugh tore from my throat. The sheer audacity of it was staggering. He had literally dragged me down the front steps, called me a barren leach, and thrown my duffle bag into the gutter while Madison drank champagne inside. Now, he was painting himself as the frantic husband and me as an unstable runaway.
Before the rage could consume me, the double doors of my suite burst open.
A loud commotion echoed from the hallway outside. Heavy thuds, shouting, and the sharp command of security personnel sliced through the sterile quiet.
“Get your damn hands off me!” Ryan’s unmistakable voice roared from the corridor. “I am Ryan Mitchell! That is my wife in there! You have no legal authority to keep a man from his pregnant wife!”
I stiffened, my heart hammering against my ribs. Instinctively, my arms wrapped around my stomach.
“Stand down, Mr. Mitchell,” a deep, robotic voice replied from the hall. It was Marcus, Jonathan’s head of private security. “You are trespassing on private medical property leased entirely under Blackwell Enterprises. Take one more step toward that door and you will be neutralized.”
“Neutralized? Are you threatening me?” Ryan barked. “Madison has three million followers watching a live stream right behind me! Do you think you can hide behind Blackwell’s name? Blackwell is harboring a runaway married woman! Call the police! I want this door kicked down right now!”
The heavy suite doors swung inward.
I expected to see Ryan barging in with a camera crew. Instead, the doorway framed Jonathan Blackwell.
He wore an bespoke midnight-blue suit, his trench coat draped over one broad shoulder. His silver-flecked obsidian eyes were cold enough to freeze blood. He did not look angry; he looked like an apex predator observing an insect that had foolishly landed on his dinner plate.
Behind him, two massive security operatives held Ryan pinned against the hallway wall, his arms twisted behind his back and his expensive designer coat ripped at the shoulder. Madison was cowering five paces back, her phone shaking in her manicured hands as her live feed sputtered in shock.
“You make a great deal of noise for a man whose empire is built on counterfeit credit, Mr. Mitchell,” Jonathan said softly, his voice cutting through the corridor like a scalpel.
Ryan struggled against the guards, his face flushed purple with humiliation. “Blackwell! What the hell is this? Hannah is my wife! You kidnapped her! I’ll ruin you in the press! I’ll file parental kidnapping charges before noon!”
Jonathan walked slowly into the corridor, not even deigning to look Ryan in the eye. He stood towering over him, radiating an aura of such absolute power that the hospital staff in the distant hallway stopped breathing.
“You threw Hannah into freezing rain at midnight without a coat, shoes, or phone,” Jonathan murmured, his tone eerily conversational. “Her core temperature was eighty-nine degrees when my team pulled her from the asphalt. That is not a domestic dispute, Ryan. That is attempted murder.”
“That’s a lie! She fell! She walked out on her own!” Ryan screamed, his voice turning shrill as he noticed Madison’s camera recording every second.
Jonathan tilted his head slightly. “Is it? Would you like me to broadcast the four-angle 4K security footage from your own driveway to every news network on the continent? The footage showing you dragging her by the collar of her sweater while your mistress cheered from the doorway?”
Ryan’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his face. “How... you don’t have that. The neighborhood server is private—”
“Nothing in this city is private from me,” Jonathan whispered, stepping within inches of Ryan’s nose. “Especially not the crimes committed against Thomas Carter’s blood.”
Jonathan snapped his fingers once.
Marcus slammed Ryan down onto his knees on the polished floor.
“Listen to me very carefully,” Jonathan stated, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying finality. “You will delete your press release within ten minutes. You will revoke every public statement. If your mistress posts a single syllable about Hannah on social media, I will liquidate Mitchell Logistics before trading opens tomorrow morning. Now remove this garbage from my hospital.”
Before Ryan could sputter another protest, the guards hauled him to his feet and dragged him down the corridor like a sack of rubbish. Madison shrieked, dropped her designer purse, and scrambled after him in pure panic.
Jonathan turned back into my room. As soon as the heavy doors locked behind him, the terrifying monster vanished. His gaze softened as he looked at me sitting in the bed, trembling with adrenaline.

He walked over, his footsteps silent on the carpet, and gently took my trembling fingers into his massive, warm hand.
“Breathe, Hannah,” he whispered gently. “The jackals cannot touch you here. Today, you leave this hospital. And today, we begin taking everything he ever loved.”
