Chapter 5 - FINANCIAL STRANGULATION

The boardroom of Mitchell Logistics was usually a place of arrogant self-congratulation. For years, Ryan had used the top-floor suite overlooking Elliott Bay to host lavish cocktail parties, showing off his newly acquired Rolexes and bragging to his fraternity friends about his inevitable ascension to the Forbes list.
On Wednesday morning at 9:15 AM, that boardroom turned into a slaughterhouse.
Ryan was pacing furiously across the Persian rug, clutching a crystal tumbler of Scotch despite the early hour. Madison sat on the leather sofa, her face smeared with mascara as she scrolled through her phone in horror.
“The comments are brutal, Ryan!” Madison shrieked, throwing her phone against the sofa cushion. “Brands are canceling my contracts! GlowSkin just dropped me from their holiday campaign! They’re saying I’m a homewrecking accomplice to domestic abuse! You told me that video of Hannah on the porch didn’t exist!”
“Shut up, Madison! Just shut up!” Ryan screamed, slamming his tumbler onto the mahogany table so hard the glass cracked. “Blackwell was bluffing! The neighborhood security cameras don’t point toward our private driveway! He was bluffing to scare us!”
The double doors of the boardroom swung open without a knock.
Ryan’s father, Donald Mitchell—the founder who had handed the company to Ryan two years ago—stumbled into the room. The elderly man’s face was the color of curdled milk, his tie crooked, clutching a sheaf of red-stamped papers in a trembling fist.
“Dad? What’s wrong with you?” Ryan sneered. “Did the bank approve the line of credit extension?”
Donald looked at his son not with anger, but with pure, unadulterated terror. He raised his arm and slapped Ryan across the face with a sickening crack.
The force of the blow sent Ryan stumbling back against the table. Madison let out a piercing scream.
“You idiot!” Donald wheezed, clutching his chest as his breath hitched. “You arrogant, narcissistic bastard! What did you do to Hannah?”
Ryan held his stinging cheek, his eyes wild with disbelief. “What are you talking about? Hannah is an ungrateful nobody! I threw her out because she was dragging me down!”
“Hannah was Thomas Carter’s daughter!” Donald yelled, his voice cracking into a sob. “I warned you five years ago when you married her! I told you her father’s military network was connected to people you don't cross! But you treated her like an unpaid servant! You cheated on her with this brainless bimbo!”
“Donald, how dare you!” Madison gasped, standing up.
“Get out of my building!” Donald roared at her, before turning back to Ryan, shoving the red papers into his son's chest. “Pacific Trust just called our thirty-million-dollar mezzanine debt. Horizon Capital called our ten-million-dollar equipment bond. They gave us two hours to wire the funds.”
Ryan grabbed the papers, his eyes skimming the notices in frantic panic. “This makes no sense! Those notes weren’t due for four years! We have covenants! We have terms!”
“Read who owns the notes, Ryan!” Donald wept. “Read the holding entity!”
Ryan flipped to the signature addendum on page twelve. His breath caught in his throat. His knees buckled slightly.
*Blackwell Global Holdings LLC.*
*Signatory: Jonathan Vance Blackwell, Chief Executive Officer.*
“Blackwell...” Ryan stammered, the paper slipping through his numb fingers to flutter onto the carpet. “Blackwell owns our debt? Since when?”
“Since six months ago!” Donald shouted. “He bought it on the secondary market for cash! And he just filed a freezing injunction against our commercial accounts in federal court. Every dollar Mitchell Logistics holds in escrow is locked. The payroll checks bounce at noon today. The fuel suppliers won’t deliver to our trucks. We are dead, Ryan. You killed us.”
Ryan stood frozen, the reality of the noose around his neck finally sinking in. “No... no, I can fix this. I can call Hannah. Hannah is weak. She’s sentimental. She’s carried my baby for months! She’ll never let me go bankrupt. I’ll make her drop the charges and tell Blackwell to back off!”
Donald looked at his son with utter pity. “You think she’s going to help you? Look out the window, Ryan.”
Ryan hurried to the sprawling glass wall looking down onto the street below.
A fleet of black government town cars had pulled up to the front entrance of the building. Men in dark blue windbreakers with yellow lettering—*SEC* and *FBI*—were stepping out, carrying empty evidence boxes and federal search warrants.
Behind them, parked directly across the street in front of the press corps, was Jonathan Blackwell’s Maybach.
The tinted rear window rolled down three inches. Inside, holding a cup of steaming tea with calm, regal grace, sat Hannah Carter.

She looked up at the executive suite window. She didn't look broken. She didn't look sad.
She looked directly into Ryan’s eyes from forty stories below, raised her teacup in a silent, chilling toast, and rolled the window back up.
