Chapter 12 - SHADOWS OVER THE CRADLE

The sterile warmth of the delivery suite turned into an icebox in a fraction of a second.
Dr. Vance and the two nurses gasped, freezing in terror, while the three newborns let out soft, restless cries on my chest.
Jonathan did not flinch. His reaction was terrifyingly swift. He reached into his scrub coat, pulled an encrypted tactical comm unit from his pocket, and pressed the override button.
“Lockdown protocol Omega,” Jonathan commanded, his voice devoid of all human emotion, turning into the lethal instrument of a commander under fire. “Seal the maternal wing titanium blast doors. Disengage the elevators. Lethal force authorized on any unauthorized target. Do not let him reach this corridor.”
*“Understood, sir!”* Marcus’s voice crackled through static over the howling storm. *“He didn’t act alone! A rogue private security contractor ambushed the King County transport van on the I-90 bridge during the blackout! They used an armored utility truck to ram our outer barrier! Two hostiles down, but Mitchell slipped through the service corridors—he’s armed and erratic!”*
I clutched my three babies tighter against my breast, my heart hammering against my ribs with frantic terror. My lower body was still completely numb from the spinal anesthesia; I couldn't run. I couldn't stand. I was entirely helpless.
“Jonathan...” I gasped, my voice trembling as panic threatened to drown me. “The babies... he’s come for the babies!”
Jonathan turned back to me. In a single, seamless motion, he drew a customized matte-black pistol from an ankle holster beneath his surgical scrubs, checking the chamber with a crisp, terrifying *clack*.
He leaned over me, his hand cupping the side of my face with a tenderness that defied the violence brewing in the air.
“Listen to me, Hannah,” he whispered, his eyes burning into mine with an unbreakable vow. “Nobody takes your children. Nobody touches a single hair on your head. As long as my heart beats, you are safe.”
He turned to Dr. Vance. “Take the boys into the reinforced safe room behind the recovery wall. Lock the vault from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except my voice.”
Dr. Vance nodded with fierce determination, immediately moving with the nurses to lift Thomas, Alexander, and David into the heated, mobile transport incubator. As they wheeled the incubator through the concealed steel vault door behind the bed, the door sealed shut with a heavy, magnetic hiss.
The lights in the main suite flickered, then died completely, plunging the room into the eerie crimson glow of the backup emergency beacons.
Outside in the hallway, the sound of heavy boots echoed against the polished tile, accompanied by the muffled *thwack* of suppressed gunfire.
Then came the frantic, unhinged laughter of a madman.
“Hannah!” Ryan’s voice shrieked from the other side of the heavy suite doors. It wasn't the voice of the polished corporate heir; it was the rabid howl of an animal that had lost everything. “I know you’re in there! I know they’re born! Open the damn door!”
A heavy thud slammed against the titanium panel.
“You think you can steal my sons?” Ryan screamed, pounding the steel with the butt of a weapon. “You think Blackwell can buy my blood? If I can’t have them, no one will! Open this door or I’ll blow the entire wing to hell!”
Jonathan stood in the center of the crimson-lit room, perfectly still, his weapon raised, his eyes locked on the door as the electronic lock began to spark under the assault of a thermal charge.
The timer on the door display clicked down: *00:03... 00:02... 00:01...*

With a deafening bang, the lock shattered inward, smoke billowing into the room, revealing the dark silhouette of Ryan Mitchell stepping through the breach, a stolen service pistol raised, his eyes wild with lethal madness—
And Jonathan Blackwell pulled the trigger.
