Chapter 51 - The Sovereign Heir

By four in the morning, the storm had finally begun to exhaust its fury, leaving the Atlantic shrouded in a thick, pre-dawn coastal mist.

The bluffs around Harbor House were illuminated by the swirling blue and red emergency strobes of fifty federal and state law enforcement vehicles. Federal agents in windbreakers moved through the wreckage of the courtyard, cataloging seized syndicate weaponry and escorting the surviving Kane mercenaries into armored transport vans.

Paramedics loaded Victor Vance onto a stretcher under heavy armed guard, his fractured arm splinted, his eyes glaring with impotent venom as the ambulance doors slammed shut.

Inside the grand library, the fire had been rekindled in the marble hearth, casting long, dancing amber shadows across the broken furniture and waterlogged Persian rugs.

Valerie sat on the low leather sofa, wrapped in a coarse gray police blanket, a pair of steel cuffs locking her wrists before her. The haughty, invincible elder sister was gone; in her place was a broken phantom, staring into the flames with hollow, vacant eyes.

Clara stood by the restored desk, tapping furiously on her ruggedized tactical laptop. "Serena, the Federal Trade Commission just confirmed the complete reversal of all fraudulent transfers. The seventy million is fully cleared and transferred into Harbor House’s newly chartered non-profit trust. Daniel’s offshore accounts have been frozen globally. He has zero assets, zero legal recourse, and seventy-four federal counts of wire fraud, attempted murder, and corporate treason waiting for him when he regains consciousness in the prison ward."

Julian stepped into the room, his bruised cheekbone patched with tactical gauze, his suit jacket discarded to reveal a clean black shirt. He handed me a steaming porcelain mug of black coffee, his gray eyes softening as his gaze traveled over my ruined, mud-caked white dress.

"The federal prosecutor just arrived at the gates," Julian said quietly. "They want your statement, Serena. Once you sign the deposition, Valerie goes into federal custody. There won't be any bail. Not with the Kane Syndicate evidence we found on Victor’s servers."

I took a slow sip of the scalding coffee, feeling the heat spread through my exhausted limbs. Then I turned and walked toward the sofa where my sister sat.

"Why, Valerie?" I asked softly. "You had half of everything. Father left Harbor House to both of us in the original draft. Why orchestrate all of this?"

Valerie looked up slowly, her hazel eyes reflecting the dying embers of the hearth. "Because you were the daughter he loved, Serena. He saw himself in you. When he looked at me, he only saw our mother’s ambition. I wanted to build something so monstrously large that he would have to look down from heaven and admit that the second-born could never match me."

She looked down at her cuffed wrists and laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "And in the end, you beat me at my own game. In a dress stained with foundation and blood."

May you like

"I didn't beat you at your game, Valerie," I answered, placing my hand gently on the emerald choker resting on the table beside her. "I changed the rules. You fought for money. I fought for our name."
