Chapter 17 - The Safehouse Secret

Julian immediately motioned for our head of security, Frank, to scan the lockbox for explosives or tracking devices. When the scanner flashed green, Julian took the box and gestured toward the private interview room located in the secure basement of Harbor House.

"Inside," Julian ordered. "Now."

Chloe scrambled to her feet, clutching her wet coat tightly around her shoulders as she followed us. Inside the soundproof room, Fatima brought in a warm towel and a cup of hot tea, placing them on the table before exiting without a single word of judgment. Harbor House didn't ask what a woman had done before she crossed our threshold; it only asked if she needed safety.

Chloe looked at the hot tea, her hands shaking so violently she couldn't lift the cup.

"Open the box, Julian," I said, sitting opposite her.

Julian used a lockpick set from his briefcase, popping the tarnished brass clasp within seconds. Inside lay an old encrypted hard drive and a stack of handwritten ledgers bearing the seal of the State Judicial Conduct Committee.

I flipped open the first ledger. My breath hitched.

"Judge Arthur Sterling," I whispered, glancing up at Julian in horror.

Julian froze. His skin drained of color, his aristocratic features hardening into absolute disbelief. "What did you just say?"

"These ledgers... they aren't Daniel's," I stammered, pointing at the signature at the bottom of a transfer authorization dated six years ago. "Daniel was funneling bribe money from commercial developers directly into trust accounts controlled by your uncle, Arthur Sterling."

The room became suffocatingly quiet. Arthur Sterling was the patriarch of the Sterling family, the retired chief justice who had mentored Julian and helped him launch his legal career. He was the man who had sat in the front row of Harbor House's opening ceremony just two days ago, smiling like a benevolent guardian.

"No," Julian whispered, taking the ledger with hands that had never once shaken in a courtroom. His eyes devoured the page, scanning the handwriting, the account codes, the dates. "Arthur told me he recused himself from Daniel's corporate bankruptcy hearings five years ago because of our friendship."

"He didn't recuse himself to protect you, Julian," Chloe said, her voice cracking. "He recused himself because Daniel was blackmailing him with these ledgers. Daniel kept the copies as an insurance policy. When Daniel was sent to prison, he gave the key to my father. But last night... your uncle called my father's cell phone. He told him that if the hard drive wasn't destroyed, none of us would survive the weekend."

Julian stared at the signature, a devastating storm of betrayal raging behind his dark eyes. The man who had been his moral compass his entire life was the architect of the very corruption we were fighting.
