Chapter 41 - The Falling Tyrant

The transfer on the lower concrete dock was brief, brutal, and thoroughly documented.

Flashbulbs popped in rapid succession as federal agents shoved Daniel Vance, hands cuffed behind his back, toward the gangway of the Coast Guard cutter. A small armada of press boats, alerted by Clara’s global leak, circled the perimeter of Black Shoal Reef like sharks, their long-range telephoto lenses capturing every second of his humiliation.

Daniel stumbled on the slick metal steps. He looked back over his shoulder toward the lighthouse platform where I stood.

"Serena!" he screamed, his voice carrying over the drone of the cutters' idling engines. "You think you won! You think taking my money makes you safe! You don't know who was really buying the shares! You don't know who signed Marcus Kane's release!"

Two marshals grabbed him by the shoulders, forcing his head down and shoving him into the steel hull of the vessel. The heavy watertight door slammed shut behind him, cutting off his screams forever.

Elena was escorted behind him, wrapping a rough wool emergency blanket around her bruised shoulders, hiding her face from the cameras as the shutter clicks immortalized her fall from grace.

I stood on the wet stone dock, the night breeze lifting the damp strands of my hair.

Julian approached me, handing me a heavy dark coat to place over my shoulders. His face was set in granite, his jaw clenched tight as he held Daniel’s recovered tactical tablet in his gloved hands.

"Coast Guard is taking them straight to the federal holding facility in Portland," Julian said, his voice low so the nearby agents couldn't overhear. "They’re facing federal racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate weapons trafficking. Daniel Vance will die inside a supermax facility."

"And the seventy million?" I asked.

"Consolidated. Transferred into your blind trust. Harbor House is legally, undeniably yours. Daniel’s offshore accounts have been seized and liquidated to pay off the subcontractors and workers he defrauded."

It was the total victory I had dreamed of every night since the anniversary party. The complete annihilation of the man who tried to erase me.

So why was Julian looking at the tablet with such dark dread?

"Julian," I said, stepping closer. "What did you find on that server?"

Julian looked up at me, his eyes dark with an emotion I had never seen in him before: genuine apprehension.

"Daniel thought he was running this operation," Julian said, tapping the cracked screen of the tablet. "He thought he hired the mercenaries through an offshore broker in Cyprus. But Clara decrypted the original escrow fund that paid their retainers three days ago."

"Who paid them?"

"The money didn't come from Marcus Kane," Julian said quietly. "And it didn't come from Daniel. It came from an inheritance trust registered in your maiden name... authorized by a biometric signature that matches only one living person."

My breath caught in my throat. The cold air suddenly felt thin, impossible to swallow. "That's impossible. My parents died twelve years ago. I am the only living heir to that trust."

"That's what the public records say," Julian murmured, turning the screen toward me. "Look."
