Chapter 42 - The Phantom Benefactor

The screen glowed with the green terminal text of Clara’s decryption program.
There, stamped in crisp digital ink across the top of the multi-million-dollar wire transfer that funded Daniel’s mercenaries, was my family’s ancestral crest—the three silver falcons of the Montgomery estate.
And below it sat an active biometric clearance code, signed less than seventy-two hours ago from inside the private guest cottage on the Harbor House grounds:
*AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED: ELEANOR MONTGOMERY.*
My sister.
The sister who had allegedly drowned in a sailing accident off the coast of Maine when I was nineteen years old. The sister whose death had broken my father, whose disappearance had left me the sole inheritor of the Montgomery fortune—and the sole target for Daniel Vance’s calculated seduction ten years later.
"Serena..." Clara’s voice whispered through my earbud, trembling so violently she could barely form the words. "I’m looking at the interior security cameras of Harbor House right now."
My fingers tightened around the lapels of Julian’s heavy coat. "Clara, what do you see?"
"The master bedroom..." Clara stammered. "The private study. Someone just bypassed the biometric locks on your father’s wall safe behind the portrait. The safe you said you couldn't open because the key was lost twelve years ago."
The blood drained from my face. The entire world seemed to narrow down to the beat of my own heart against the ceramic armor beneath my dress.
Daniel hadn't been the architect of my destruction.
He was never smart enough to orchestrate an international financial trap of this scale. He had been a tool. A greedy, arrogant pawn manipulated by someone who knew every secret, every weakness, and every code of the Montgomery family from the inside.
Someone who had let me fight Daniel, let me consolidate all seventy million into Harbor House, let me purge the syndicate and the board—so that the entire fortune would be sitting in a single, unencumbered account, ready to be claimed by the rightful firstborn heir who had just returned from the dead.
Across the water, the lights of Harbor House blinked twice.
Not a power failure.
A signal. The exact sequence my sister and I used to flash from our bedroom windows when we were children playing on the rocky shore.
*Two short. One long.*
Julian reached for his sidearm, his eyes instantly locking onto mine with lethal resolve. "Serena. We go back right now with the strike team."
I looked down at the tablet screen, then up across the black ocean toward the glowing mansion on the cliff.
The white silk dress clung to me, stained with the blood of the husband I had just destroyed. But the war wasn't over.

The ghost had come home to claim the crown.
"No strike team," I whispered, my voice turning to pure steel under the starlight. "Take me home, Julian. It’s time to meet my sister."
