Chapter 9 - The Clean Slate

Over the next four months, the legal and financial wreckage of Trent Lawson’s life was cleared away with mechanical efficiency.

Facing twenty-five years in state prison for organized financial fraud and grand larceny, Brooke Jenkins took a comprehensive plea deal, agreeing to forfeit every luxury item, watch, and diamond she had acquired with my money. She was sentenced to seven years at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Perryville.

Gloria Lawson, terrified of spending her remaining years behind bars, surrendered her pension and signed over the equity in her retirement condo to reimburse my legal fees, receiving five years of strictly monitored home probation.

Trent had nowhere to hide. Stripped of his marriage, his country club standing, and his reputation, he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, his name splashed across the business sections of every Phoenix newspaper as a cautionary tale of greed and fraud.

He moved into a tiny, dilapidated one-bedroom apartment in South Phoenix, working a low-level desk job at a used-car liquidation lot, his wages garnished by seventy percent to repay the civil judgment Evelyn had secured against him.

Meanwhile, I had the Paradise Valley home completely gutted. Every piece of furniture, every rug, and every curtain that had been touched by Trent or Brooke was donated to a local women’s shelter or hauled away to the city recycling plant.

I hired an elite landscape design team to replace the sterile stone courtyard with a lush, fragrant desert botanical garden filled with night-blooming cereus, golden barrel cacti, and towering agaves.

The house was no longer a monument to an empty marriage; it was a sanctuary of peace, sunlight, and uncompromising independence.

My commercial development firm landed the largest municipal contract in Scottsdale’s history—a forty-million-dollar sustainable mixed-use urban park that would bear my family’s name for generations to come.

I was working harder than ever, but for the first time in my adult life, my energy was entirely my own. The parasitic drain of Trent and his toxic family had been severed at the root, allowing my real life to finally take bloom.
