Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Trent took a sharp step backward, his eyes widening in absolute horror as he saw me standing in the driveway. Brooke clutched her silk wrap tightly around her shoulders, while Gloria let out a loud, theatrical gasp, stumbling as if her legs were suddenly giving out.

"Harper!" Trent yelled, his voice cracking with panicked fury. "What is the meaning of this circus? Have you completely lost your mind?"

"I’m just checking on my investment, Trent," I said, my voice steady, carrying clearly to the twenty guests who were now peering nervously over the terrace railing. "And I’m here to ensure that unauthorized trespassers vacate my property within fifteen minutes."

"Trespassers?" Gloria shrieked, marching down the steps with her fists clenched, completely forgetting to feign her supposed terminal illness. "You heartless, vindictive monster! Brooke is carrying your husband's baby! You can't throw a pregnant woman into the street!"

"Brooke is welcome to call an Uber, Gloria," Evelyn Carter interjected, stepping forward and handing Deputy Miller the verified title documents. "Just as she called the ride from Las Vegas eighteen months ago when she helped Trent structure his gambling debt into false medical invoices."

Brooke froze, her face turning the color of wet chalk beneath her heavy makeup. Her eyes darted toward the street, searching for an escape route that was completely blocked by patrol cars.

"What is she talking about, Brooke?" Trent asked, turning to his mistress, his voice dropping into a confused, frantic register. "What gambling debt?"

"Oh, Trent, don't play stupid now," I said, walking slowly up the flagstone walkway until I was standing three feet from them. "Did you really think the bank wouldn't verify where three hundred and ninety thousand dollars was going?"

"The money was for my mother’s oncology clinic!" Trent shouted, pointing a shaking finger at Gloria. "She’s dying of stage-four lung cancer! You signed those transfers yourself!"

"Your mother doesn't have cancer, Trent," Deputy Miller stated calmly, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his utility belt. "In fact, Mrs. Gloria Lawson was seen playing twenty-seven holes of golf at the Troon North club yesterday afternoon."

Gloria’s mouth snapped shut like a bear trap, her chest heaving as she glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"And as for the baby, Trent," I continued, tilting my head slightly with genuine pity. "You might want to ask Brooke why her clinical file at the San Diego Fertility Center lists an anonymous California donor instead of your name."

The silence that followed was so profound that the gentle rustle of the desert palms sounded like a thunderstorm. Trent spun around to face Brooke, his hands trembling so violently he dropped his crystal glass onto the stones, where it shattered into a hundred jagged pieces.

"Brooke?" Trent whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, childlike squeak. "Tell her she’s lying. Tell me right now she’s lying!"
