Chapter 5 - The Blue Lights on the Mountain

The sun had just dipped below the desert ridge, bathing the Paradise Valley hillside in deep violet and fiery crimson shadows. On my terrace, the party was in full swing, classical jazz floating out over the infinity pool while Trent gave a speech about family, legacy, and new beginnings.
"To Brooke," Trent declared, raising his crystal flute toward the twenty guests gathered around the outdoor fireplace. "The woman who showed me what true partnership looks like, and to our child, who will grow up in this magnificent home."
The guests cheered, their glasses clinking together in harmonious celebration. Brooke placed a delicate hand over her abdomen, leaning into Trent’s side with the practiced innocence of an actress executing her final scene.
Then, the sudden flash of red and blue emergency strobes washed across the whitewashed courtyard walls.
Two marked sheriff cruiser units and a third unmarked black SUV pulled silently up the winding paver driveway, blocking Trent’s Mercedes and Gloria’s sedan completely.
The music abruptly died as the catering staff froze, looking toward the iron security gates. Trent lowered his champagne glass, his brows knitting together in sharp irritation.
"Who invited the local patrol?" Trent muttered, straightening his designer blazer. "I’ll handle this. Probably just a noise complaint from the neighbors down the hill."
He marched down the stone steps toward the front courtyard, Gloria and Brooke trailing curiously behind him like ducklings following their mother.
Deputy Sheriff Miller, a broad-shouldered man with twenty years on the force, stepped out of the lead cruiser, holding a stamped legal folder in his gloved hand. Behind him, two armed deputies took positions near the fountain.
"Trent Lawson?" Deputy Miller asked, his voice booming across the quiet residential street.
"Yes, Deputy, is there an issue?" Trent asked smoothly, flashing his polished country-club smile. "We’re having a private family gathering. If the music was a bit loud, we can certainly turn it down."
"This isn't a noise complaint, Mr. Lawson," Deputy Miller said, stepping past him toward the front entrance. "I am serving an emergency court order for immediate eviction, issued under Writ 409-B by the Superior Court of Maricopa County."
Trent’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, incredulous sneer. "Excuse me? This is my residence! My wife and I are currently separating, and I have residential possession rights!"
May you like
"You have zero legal rights to this parcel, Mr. Lawson," a voice called out from behind the deputies.
I stepped out of the black SUV, wearing a tailored navy suit and flat leather boots, my hair pulled back in an immaculate knot. Beside me walked Evelyn Carter, carrying three bound copies of our property deeds and the corporate charter.
