Chapter 3 - The Ghost Architect

At ten o'clock sharp, my private investigator, Marcus Vance, walked into my hotel suite carrying a thick leather dossier. Marcus was a former federal investigator who specialized in tracing high-net-worth matrimonial hidden assets.

He dropped the folder onto the desk, pulling out a chair opposite me without waiting for an invitation. "Your husband isn't just an adulterer, Mrs. Lawson. He's remarkably incompetent at white-collar crime."

"Show me," I said, pulling the dossier toward me.

"Brooke Vance isn't some innocent yoga instructor he picked up at an organic juice bar," Marcus began, tapping the photograph on the first page. "Her real legal name is Brooke Jenkins. She’s twenty-six, has two prior civil judgments for credit fraud in Nevada, and worked as a VIP promotional host at a private casino in Las Vegas three years ago."

I stared at the glossy image of a young woman with bleach-blonde hair, smiling widely next to high-stakes card tables.

"How did she meet Trent?" I asked.

"Trent lost eighty thousand dollars at that exact private casino during his supposed 'golf retreat' eighteen months ago," Marcus explained, turning the page to show hotel security stills. "He couldn't cover the markers. Brooke Jenkins worked with an underground lending ring that negotiated his debt in exchange for inside corporate access to your accounts."

The room seemed to tilt slightly as the scope of the conspiracy widened far beyond petty domestic cruelty. Trent hadn't just fallen in love; he had been cornered by his own degenerate habits and chose to cannibalize his wife to save his own skin.

"They concocted the sick-mother narrative because Trent knew your soft spot was family healthcare after your father's battle with cancer," Marcus continued, his eyes grim. "Gloria was cut in for ten percent of the monthly wire transfers just to play along with the medical routine."

"And the pregnancy?" I asked, bracing myself for the answer.

Marcus slid another document across the mahogany surface. It was a medical intake form from an elite fertility clinic in San Diego dated four months prior.

"The pregnancy is real," Marcus said quietly. "However, according to the donor and clinical intake records we subpoenaed through Evelyn's emergency discovery motion, Trent is not the biological father."

I looked up from the document, stunned into absolute silence. "What did you say?"

"Trent’s medical history from the fertility clinic indicates complete physiological sterility resulting from an untreated adolescent complication," Marcus stated flatly. "Brooke used an anonymous donor protocol in California while telling Trent it was an unplanned miracle between the two of them."

I pressed my hands against my mouth, a breathless, incredulous laugh escaping my chest. Trent had destroyed his five-year marriage, stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars, and evicted the woman who funded his entire life—all for a child that wasn't even his, carrying out a scam orchestrated by a Vegas card hustler.
