Chapter 8 - The Handcuffs Click

The interrogation room of the 19th Precinct smelled of burnt coffee and industrial disinfectant.
Daniel Ashford sat at the metal table, his hands cuffed to an iron ring bolted to the floor. His custom suit was wrinkled, stained with sweat, and his jaw was covered in two days of dark stubble.
Across the table sat Detective Miller, a seasoned homicide investigator who had seen every flavor of arrogance Manhattan had to offer.
"My lawyer is on his way," Daniel said through gritted teeth, glaring at the detective. "And when he gets here, every single one of you is going to face a civil rights lawsuit that will cost this city millions."
Detective Miller didn't look up from his clipboard. He casually took a sip from a paper cup, turned a page, and set a glossy color photograph on the table in front of Daniel.
It was a screenshot of the surveillance video.
The exact frame where Daniel’s fist made contact with my pregnant abdomen.
"That's a nice watch you're wearing in this picture, Daniel," Miller remarked casually. "Patek Philippe, right? Platinum casing. Looks heavy. The medical examiner says the impact broke two of your wife’s ribs and fractured her uterine wall. That’s not a domestic dispute, Daniel. In this state, striking an eight-month-pregnant woman with that level of force carries a charge of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault resulting in fetal endangerment."
Daniel swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously, but he forced a sneer.
"She provoked me. She attacked Celeste. I was defending the mother of my child."
Miller leaned back in his metal chair and let out a long, dry whistle.
"Ah, yes. The child."
Miller pulled another document from his folder and slid it across the table.
"What is that?" Daniel asked, his eyes darting toward the paper.
"That's a certified subpoena return from Dr. Aris Thorne’s clinic in Flushing," Miller said, resting his elbows on the table. "Along with Celeste Montgomery’s complete blood panel taken two hours ago when we booked her for felony conspiracy and attempted extortion."
Daniel frowned, his brow furrowing. "Booked her? What are you talking about? Celeste is pregnant! She needs medical care!"
"Daniel," Miller said, looking at him with genuine amusement. "Celeste Montgomery isn't pregnant. She hasn't been pregnant. She bought forged ultrasound scans for five thousand dollars from an unlicensed technician."
Daniel froze.
The color vanished from his face so fast it looked as though his heart had stopped pumping blood.
"What... what did you say?"
"She played you, son," Miller chuckled softly, shaking his head. "She and your cousin-in-law, Julian Vance. They set you up to blow up your marriage so they could cash in on a divorce settlement. Only problem was, you didn't have any money left to settle with."
"No..." Daniel stammered, shaking his head violently, his cuffs rattling against the iron table ring. "No! That's impossible! She showed me the tests! We heard the heartbeat!"
"You heard a digital sound file played through a blue-tooth speaker in an unaccredited clinic," Miller replied, his voice dropping into cold reality. "Celeste rolled on you forty minutes ago, Daniel. She signed a full confession. She told the DA that you were the one who planned the confrontation at the baby shower to humiliate Mara into accepting a quick settlement. She’s testifying against you in exchange for a five-year plea deal."
"She’s lying!" Daniel shrieked, slamming his cuffed hands against the table. The iron chain strained against the bolt. "That lying bitch! She ruined me! She took everything from me!"
"You took everything from yourself, Mr. Ashford," Miller said, standing up and tucking his clipboard under his arm. "Your arraignment is in one hour. Bail has been set at ten million dollars, cash-only. And since every bank account tied to your name has been frozen by the federal bankruptcy trustee... I suggest you get comfortable in Rikers Island."
Miller turned and walked toward the heavy steel door.
"Wait!" Daniel screamed, tears of pure, unadulterated panic finally breaking down his cheeks. "Call my wife! Call Mara! Let me speak to her! She loves me! She spent ten years with me! She wouldn't let me rot in prison! Just give me five minutes on the phone with her!"
Detective Miller paused at the door, turned his head, and gave Daniel a look of cold, unyielding pity.
"Mrs. Mercer has a permanent restraining order against you, Daniel. If you so much as whisper her name in an outgoing prison phone call, you catch another felony count."
The heavy steel door slammed shut.
The lock turned with a final, echoing *clank*.

And for the first time in his thirty-four years of privileged existence, Daniel Ashford was left sitting completely alone in the dark.
