Chapter 2 - Code Crimson

The French doors leading to the terrace violently blew open from the downdraft of the incoming helicopter.

Curtains billowed like ghosts. The silver balloons popped against the ceiling. Guests began to scream in genuine panic, scattering backward as the glass tables rattled against the floor.

"What is going on?!" Evelyn shrieked, clutching her designer pearls as napkins and flower petals whipped through the air. "Daniel, call security! Have the guards shoot that thing down! It’s ruining my lawn!"

"The security team isn't answering!" Daniel yelled back, his phone pressed desperately to his ear. "None of the gate codes are working! The main gates just swung open!"

Before Daniel could take another step, the heavy double front doors of the mansion were kicked inward off their brass latches with a resounding crash.

Six state troopers in full tactical gear poured into the foyer, assault rifles held at low-ready, followed immediately by four paramedics in high-visibility flight suits pushing a motorized trauma gurney.

"Nobody move!" the lead trooper barked, his voice booming over the chaos. "State Police! Keep your hands where we can see them!"

"Are you out of your mind?!" Daniel roared, his entitlement overtaking his shock. He stepped in front of the troopers, puffing his chest out. "Do you have any idea whose home this is? I am Daniel Ashford! My father sits on the governor’s economic council! Get these filthy boots out of my foyer before I have your badges stripped!"

The lead trooper didn't even flinch. He didn't argue. He simply stepped to the side, allowing a woman in a sharply tailored charcoal suit to enter behind him.

Dr. Linda Vance.

Chief of Surgery at Presbyterian Memorial, personal physician to the Vance family for twenty-five years, and my godmother.

Behind her walked Marcus Drake, the lead general counsel for the Vance-Mercer Trust—a man whose legal filings had dismantled three Fortune 500 monopolies before his fortieth birthday.

Linda’s eyes scanned the room, bypassed the frozen socialites, bypassed the trembling Arthur and screeching Evelyn, and locked directly onto me lying on the floor in a puddle of spilled Scotch and blood.

Her face hardened into stone.

"Trauma team, on her now!" Linda commanded, her voice cutting through the hysteria. "Code Crimson! We have suspected placental abruption secondary to physical trauma! Prep an emergency fetal heart monitor and start two large-bore IVs!"

The paramedics surged forward, ignoring Daniel completely. One paramedic literally shoved Daniel aside with a forearm to the chest, sending the billionaire heir stumbling into Celeste, who shrieked as she lost her balance and tumbled onto an overturned chair.

"Hey! Don't you touch him!" Celeste screamed, scrambling to her feet, her designer facade slipping into gutter venom. "Do you know who we are? I'm pregnant with his child! That bitch threw herself down! Daniel didn't do anything!"

Linda Vance knelt beside me, her hands steady, professional, and warm against my freezing skin.

"Mara," Linda whispered, her eyes fierce with maternal terror. "Look at me, sweetheart. Stay with me."

"Linda..." Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, hot and burning. "The baby... I can't feel Liam. He was kicking twenty minutes ago. Then Daniel... Daniel hit me right here."

Linda placed the ultrasound wand directly over my swollen stomach. The portable monitor lit up with static.

The silence that followed was the most terrifying sound in the universe.

For five agonizing seconds, there was nothing.

Then, a faint, erratic, dangerously slow beat sputtered through the speaker.

*Thump... thump... pause... thump.*

"Fetal bradycardia," Linda said, her voice dropping into that chilling, flat register doctors use when a life is hanging by a single thread. "Heart rate is dropping below eighty. Placenta has separated. She’s bleeding internally. We have less than twelve minutes before brain death from oxygen deprivation."

"No," I sobbed, clutching Linda’s sleeve with fingers that had turned white. "Save him. Linda, don't worry about me. Save Liam. Cut him out right now. Please."

"We’re taking you straight to the surgical chopper, Mara," Linda said, leaning down to kiss my forehead. "You're going to live, and your son is going to live. Hold on to me."

"Stop right there!" Daniel’s voice echoed across the foyer.

He was trembling with rage, his face flushed purple, looking at the paramedics strapping me onto the trauma gurney.

"She is my wife!" Daniel yelled, pointing a trembling finger at Linda. "That is my unborn child! You are not taking her anywhere without my permission! I demand to see your credentials! I am transferring her to St. Jude’s Private Pavilion under my family's private physicians!"

Marcus Drake, the towering attorney, stepped forward. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick, red-stamped manila folder, and shoved it directly against Daniel’s chest.

"Mr. Ashford," Drake said, his voice quiet, lethal, and loud enough for every guest to hear. "You no longer have medical power of attorney. You no longer have marital authority. As of 1:59 p.m. today, Mrs. Mara Ashford filed for an emergency protective order, immediate legal separation, and total revocation of all spousal privileges, backed by sworn video evidence."

"What video evidence?!" Evelyn screamed, rushing to Daniel’s side. "There are no cameras in this house! This is private property! You're trespassing!"

Drake gestured calmly toward the discreet, pinhole architectural smoke detectors mounted in the four corners of the high-ceilinged room.

"All properties owned by the Vance-Mercer Real Estate Holding Company are equipped with cloud-synced security feeds," Drake said with a thin, merciless smile. "Which brings me to my second point, Mrs. Ashford."

Drake pulled out another document and handed it toward Arthur.

"You are not the owners of this estate. The deed of trust was transferred to Vance-Mercer five years ago under the mezzanine debt restructuring. You are merely tenants-at-will. And your tenancy has just been terminated for cause. You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises before the county sheriff removes your personal effects to the sidewalk."

Arthur stared at the paper. His chest hitched. He clutched his left arm, gasping for air as if the room had run out of oxygen. "Vance-Mercer...? Who... who is Vance-Mercer to her?!"

Drake looked at the broken old man with sheer pity.

"Mara Ashford isn't a charity case, Mr. Ashford. Her maiden name is Mara Vance Mercer. She is the sole surviving heir to the Mercer Steel and Continental Banking fortune. She owns your company. She owns your home. And in about thirty seconds, she is going to take everything you have ever loved and grind it into dust."

The paramedics lifted my gurney.

As they wheeled me through the shattered front doors toward the roaring blades of the helicopter waiting on the lawn, I turned my head just enough to catch Daniel’s face.

For the first time in ten years, he wasn't looking at me with irritation.

May you like

He was looking at me with the absolute, paralyzed horror of a man who had just realized he had struck God with a pebble, and the sky was about to fall on his head.
