Chapter 5 - The Public Unmasking

Celeste thought she could win the war on Instagram.

At 9:00 p.m. that night, while I sat in a wheelchair beside Liam’s incubator in the NICU, watching my tiny son breathe with the help of a gentle oxygen cannula, Celeste went live to her four hundred thousand followers.

She sat in the back of an Uber, wearing no makeup, her eyes carefully dabbed with water to simulate tears, holding an ultrasound photo against her chest.

*"I never wanted to speak publicly about this,"* Celeste sobbed into her phone screen, her voice shaking with calculated fragility. *"But the lies being spread by Mara Ashford and her billionaire attack-dog attorneys are destroying innocent lives. Today, at a private family gathering, Mara attacked me. She was jealous because Daniel and I are expecting a child together. She threw herself onto the floor to frame Daniel, and now she is using her offshore wealth to destroy a historic American family. Daniel is a kind, gentle man who was trapped in a loveless marriage with an abusive woman. Please... pray for us and our unborn baby."*

Within thirty minutes, the video had two million views.

Comment sections exploded. Gossip blogs picked it up. *"Billionaire Heiress Frames Cheating Husband?"* ran the headline on Page Six.

Daniel retweeted the video with a single sentence: *The truth will always prevail in the light.*

Sitting in my hospital room, Marcus Drake closed his laptop with a quiet, satisfying click.

"She took the bait," Drake said, looking over his reading glasses at me.

"Is the press package ready?" I asked, gently adjusting the IV line in my forearm.

"Every network," Drake confirmed. "ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and a synchronized upload to YouTube, TikTok, and X. We also have the full medical affidavit signed by Dr. Vance documenting the severe blunt-force trauma to your uterine wall, along with the 911 dispatch audio from the Ashford estate where the butler can be heard begging Daniel to stop."

"Release it," I said.

"Now?" Drake asked, an eyebrow arched.

"Right now. Let them have their prime-time news cycle."

What happened next was described by media analysts as the most devastating public execution of a high-society family in modern history.

At 10:15 p.m., right as the late-night news broadcasts began, the Vance-Mercer Trust uploaded a four-minute, unedited 4K video clip recorded from the ceiling sensors of the Ashford parlor.

The video was crystal clear. The audio was studio quality.

The entire nation watched in horror as Daniel Ashford adjusted his cuffs, walked up to his heavily pregnant wife, and deliberately drove a savage blow into her stomach.

The nation heard the sickening thud.

They heard my desperate gasp as I hit the floor.

They saw Daniel take a sip of champagne.

They heard Evelyn Ashford sneer, *"Finally, a woman capable of giving this family what it deserves,"* as she toasted the mistress.

And they watched Celeste smile triumphantly over my bleeding body.

The internet did not just turn on Daniel Ashford; it erupted into a firestorm of pure, unadulterated fury.

Within fifteen minutes, the hashtag **#ArrestDanielAshford** was the number-one trending topic worldwide.

Celeste’s Instagram account lost three hundred thousand followers in an hour, replaced by over fifty thousand comments calling her a monster, an accomplice to attempted murder, and a sociopath. Every brand that had ever sponsored her—from fitness teas to luxury fashion lines—issued emergency statements terminating their contracts and scrubbing her face from their websites.

By 11:00 p.m., protestors began gathering outside the gates of the Ashford estate, carrying signs that read **JUSTICE FOR MARA** and **MONSTERS IN TUXEDOS**.

Television anchors on every major network stopped their regular broadcasts to air the footage, warning viewers of the graphic violence. Legal commentators openly questioned why Daniel Ashford had not yet been taken into custody.

In a rented penthouse suite at the Four Seasons—paid for with the last functional credit card Daniel had—the television played the footage on a continuous, inescapable loop.

Daniel stood in the center of the living room, his hands clutching his head, staring at the screen as the Manhattan District Attorney appeared on CNN, announcing that a grand jury had been convened and an indictment for aggravated assault, felony domestic violence, and attempted murder was imminent.

"Turn it off!" Daniel screamed, throwing his crystal tumbler at the sixty-five-inch television screen.

The glass shattered against the display, leaving a black, webbed crack across his own televised face.

"Turn it off! Turn it off!"

"Daniel..." Celeste whimpered from the sofa, her phone buzzing non-stop in her lap, notification after notification flashing with death threats and cancelled contracts. "Daniel, what are we going to do? My agency dropped me. My bank account was locked. They're saying the police are coming!"

Daniel spun on her, his face contorted with the same vicious hatred he had directed at me hours earlier.

"Shut up!" he roared. "This is your fault! You insisted on going to that damn shower! You insisted on rubbing it in her face!"

"My fault?!" Celeste shrieked, standing up. "You hit her, you idiot! You hit her right in front of everyone! You told me she was nobody! You told me she was a penniless orphan who would take whatever settlement you threw at her!"

Before Daniel could respond, the doorbell of the penthouse chimed.

Not a polite ring. A hard, continuous buzz.

Daniel froze.

Through the peephole, illuminated by the hallway sconces, stood two plainclothes detectives from the New York Police Department, flanked by three uniformed officers holding an arrest warrant.
