Chapter 6 - Celeste's House of Cards

While Daniel was being escorted out of the Four Seasons in handcuffs, paraded past a gauntlet of flashing cameras and screaming journalists, Marcus Drake was sitting across from me in my hospital room with another folder.
This one was thin, bound in black cardstock.
"You're going to want to see this, Mara," Drake said, sliding the file across my bed tray.
Liam was finally in my arms. He was tiny—just barely five pounds—swaddled tightly in an organic cotton blanket, his soft, downy head resting against my chest. His breathing was steady now, his little heart beating strong against my ribs. Every time I looked at him, the phantom pain in my surgical incision vanished.
"What is it, Marcus?" I asked, keeping my voice low so as not to wake my son.
"Our private investigators spent the last twelve hours digging into Celeste Montgomery’s background," Drake replied, a grim smile touching the corner of his lips. "Specifically, her medical history."
I looked up from Liam. "Her pregnancy?"
"There is no pregnancy."
The room went dead silent.
"What did you say?"
"Celeste Montgomery was never pregnant," Drake said flatly. "She visited an underground boutique cosmetic clinic in Queens three weeks ago to purchase forged ultrasound printouts. We subpoenaed the clinic's digital records this morning under a federal wire-fraud investigation. We have the text messages between Celeste and the clinic manager negotiating the price for high-resolution fetal imaging files."
I stared at Drake, stunned. "Why would she do that? Daniel would have found out within months."
"Daniel wasn't supposed to find out until it was too late," Drake explained, opening the file to reveal copies of text messages and bank transfers. "Celeste was working with Julian Vance."
My breath caught in my throat.
Julian Vance. My estranged, disgraced second cousin who had been cut out of my grandfather’s will eight years ago for embezzling twelve million dollars from the family foundation.
"Julian funded her," Drake continued. "The designer clothes, the rented sports cars, the introduction to Daniel at the charity gala six months ago. The plan was simple: Celeste seduces Daniel, convinces him she is carrying his legitimate heir, pushes him to divorce you, and secures a massive marital settlement from the Ashford estate. Julian was promised a forty percent kickback from whatever settlement Celeste walked away with."
"They didn't know," I whispered, the absurdity of the entire plot washing over me. "Neither Julian nor Celeste knew that the Ashford money was already gone. They thought they were targeting an American billionaire family."
"Precisely," Drake chuckled softly. "Julian assumed Daniel was the golden goose. Daniel assumed Celeste was the fertile young prize that would secure his family's legacy. They were two con artists running a scam on a family that was already functionally bankrupt."
"And Celeste used my baby shower to force Daniel’s hand," I said, piecing it together. "She wanted the public confrontation. She wanted to force Daniel to choose her publicly so he couldn't back out."
"She forced his hand, alright," Drake said, leaning back in his chair. "Straight into a twenty-year felony indictment."
I looked down at Liam, his tiny fingers curled around my pinky.
"Does Daniel know yet?"
"Not yet," Drake smiled. "He’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the 19th Precinct waiting for his arraignment. The detectives are preparing to inform him during his initial interrogation."
I touched Liam’s soft cheek, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of his life.

"Make sure there’s a camera in that interrogation room, Marcus," I said softly. "I want that footage preserved for the trial."
