Chapter 8 - Ghosts in the Boardroom

Daniel’s panic transformed instantly into a desperate, feral rage. He rushed across the room toward the antique mahogany credenza where he kept his personal safe, punching in the six-digit code with frantic, sweating fingers.

"You think a piece of paper from Evelyn Vance is going to kick me out of my own home?!" Daniel snarled, the safe door swinging open. "I have bearer bonds in this safe worth five million dollars! I have the offshore keys to the Zurich accounts! I built this network while you were playing the dutiful little housewife!"

Claire didn't move. She stood beside the dining table, watching him pull out thick manila folders and digital hard drives.

"Go ahead, Daniel," Claire remarked coolly. "Open the blue binder."

Daniel froze. His hands reached for the thick navy binder marked *Whitmore Crest Capital – Offshore Series B*. He flipped it open.

Every single page inside had been stamped in bold red ink: **ASSET RESTRAINED BY COURT ORDER - CIVIL DIVISION DOCKET #4491-B**.

"How...?" Daniel stammered, dropping the binder onto the floor. Loose papers scattered across the Persian rug. "How did they freeze the offshore accounts? Those are routed through Nevis! United States jurisdiction doesn't reach Nevis!"

"It doesn't," a deep, authoritative voice resonated from the foyer.

Daniel snapped his head toward the entrance.

The private elevator doors had opened silently. Standing in the foyer was Evelyn Vance, accompanied by two uniformed deputies from the New York County Sheriff’s Office and a tall, impeccably dressed man carrying a federal badge on his lapel.

"United States jurisdiction doesn't reach Nevis without cause," Evelyn said, stepping into the room with her leather briefcase. "However, when the underlying funds are flagged by Interpol as proceeds of international wire fraud originating from a deceased veteran's estate, the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty applies within four hours. Good evening, Daniel."

The man with the federal badge stepped forward, showing his credentials to Daniel. "Daniel Whitmore? I’m Special Agent Miller from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division. We have executed warrants on your offices at Lexington Avenue, and we are here to ensure the preservation of all digital and physical assets subject to federal seizure."

Eleanor leaped up from the couch, her emerald dress trailing behind her like a poisonous stain. "Officer! This is a private residence! This girl is having a psychotic breakdown! My son owns this penthouse! Look at the building directory! Look at the lease!"

Agent Miller didn't even look at Eleanor. He handed an official legal document to Daniel.

"Mr. Whitmore, as of 4:15 PM today, the Department of Buildings and the Manhattan County Registrar confirmed that title to this unit is held solely by The Bennett Family Heritage Trust. The sub-lease executed by Whitmore Crest Capital was nullified pursuant to an emergency petition granted by Judge Holbrook. You are currently trespassing on private property."

"Trespassing?!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice reaching an unbearable pitch. "I live here! I decorate this place! I selected the marble in the master bath!"

"With my father’s money," Claire interrupted, walking toward the hallway door. She knocked three times on the brass knocker.

The door opened slowly. Margaret stepped out. She had changed into a clean, simple wool cardigan. Her posture was straight, her head held high, though her eyes were still wide with disbelief as she looked at the law enforcement officers filling the room.

Claire took her mother’s bruised hand and pulled her into the center of the grand room.

"Mom," Claire said, loud enough for every agent and deputy to hear. "Tell Agent Miller who gave you those bruises on your wrist."
