Chapter 6 - Freezing the Bloodline

A dead silence descended over the grand dining room.
Eleanor’s fork stopped halfway to her mouth. Her manicured fingers tightened around the sterling silver until her knuckles turned white. Across the table, Daniel’s face darkened from relaxed arrogance to pure, seething fury.
"Claire," Daniel said, his voice dropping into the low, threatening pitch he used when he wanted to break her spirit behind closed doors. "You’ve had too much wine. Apologize to my mother and go upstairs to our bedroom."
Julian Croft and his wife glanced at each other, sensing the sudden drop in atmospheric pressure. "Perhaps we should cut dinner short, Daniel," Julian murmured, beginning to dab his napkin against his lips.
"Nonsense, Julian!" Eleanor interjected loudly, forcing a brittle laugh that cracked at the edges. "My daughter-in-law suffers from nervous exhaustion. Her father’s passing was difficult, and she frequently confuses reality with fiction. Claire, take yourself to bed. Now."
Before Claire could speak, the distinct chime of Daniel’s iPhone broke the tension. It wasn't an ordinary notification; it was the high-priority siren Daniel reserved for margin alerts from his wealth management firm.
Daniel frowned, pulling the device from his jacket pocket. He tapped the screen, expecting an automated confirmation of their quarterly wire transfer. Instead, his eyes widened, the color draining from his cheeks in a sickening wash of gray.
A second chime sounded. Then a third.
His phone began to vibrate violently in his hand as incoming calls overwhelmed the screen: *Marcus Sterling (CFO)*, followed by *Manhattan Chase Private Wealth*, followed by *Sotheby’s International Escrow*.
"Excuse me," Daniel muttered, his voice cracking slightly. He pushed back his chair and walked toward the terrace doors, his hand shaking as he answered. "Marcus? What the hell is going on? I’m in the middle of hosting the Symphony board."
Claire did not move. She calmly picked up her water glass, taking a deliberate sip as she watched Daniel through the glass reflection. Thanks to the earpiece hidden behind her hair, she could hear Harrison Vance’s voice patched through the line, intercepting the corporate network.
*"Daniel, it’s over,"* Marcus Sterling’s voice blared over Daniel's phone, loud enough that even Eleanor caught fragments of it. *"The Bennett Trust filed an emergency lis pendens thirty minutes ago. The New York State Supreme Court just signed a blanket asset freeze on Whitmore Crest Capital. Every corporate account is locked. The sheriff’s department is en route to our Lexington Avenue offices with a seizure warrant for our servers!"*
"What are you talking about?!" Daniel hissed, turning his back to the dining room and hunching over his phone like a cornered animal. "I own sixty percent of the holding company! The trust has no voting jurisdiction without my signature!"
*"You don't own anything, Daniel!"* Marcus shouted back in blind panic. *"The original master incorporation was registered under Thomas Bennett's sole name. Your power-of-attorney was declared a forgery based on digital forensic scans submitted by Vance & Sterling an hour ago! The bank pulled our thirty-million-dollar credit line. We are bankrupt, Daniel. As of five o'clock, Whitmore Crest is completely insolvent!"*
Daniel staggered backward, the heavy glass door rattling against his shoulder. He turned around, staring into the dining room.
His eyes bypassed Eleanor, bypassed Julian Croft, and locked directly onto Claire.

Claire set her crystal glass down on the mahogany table with a soft, final *click*. She tilted her head, her gaze piercing through him without a flicker of fear.
"Is something wrong, darling?" Claire asked sweetly. "You look as though you've just seen a ghost."
