Chapter 7 - The Fracturing Mask

Eleanor sensed the disaster before she understood its mechanics. She stood up from the head of the table, her emerald silk dress rustling aggressively.

"Julian, please accept our apologies," Eleanor said, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to maintain her aristocratic facade. "An urgent operational matter requires Daniel's attention. My driver will arrange private town cars for all of you downstairs."

The guests did not wait to be told twice. Julian Croft stood up immediately, muttering polite excuses, and guided his wife toward the private elevator foyer. Within two minutes, the heavy double doors of the penthouse clicked shut, leaving only the sound of the wind howling against the glass windows eighty floors above the city.

The moment the elevator indicator light began its descent, the mask vanished completely.

Eleanor spun around, her face twisted into a mask of pure, predatory hatred. She marched straight toward Claire, raising her diamond-clad hand. "You little bitch! What did you do? What did you tell Marcus?!"

Before Eleanor’s hand could strike Claire’s face, Claire caught her wrist mid-air.

The grip was not the weak, frightened touch of a victim. Claire twisted Eleanor’s arm downward with ruthless leverage, forcing the older woman to gasp in pain and sink down toward the parquet floor.

"Don't you ever raise your hand to me again," Claire said, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of all emotion. "You spent three years putting bruises on my mother’s arms because you knew she was too humble to complain. You thought because my father was dead, there was no one left to defend her."

"Daniel!" Eleanor shrieked, clutching her twisted wrist as Claire shoved her backward onto the velvet sofa. "Daniel, kill her! Call security! She’s insane!"

Daniel didn't move toward Claire. He couldn't. His eyes were glued to his tablet screen, which was now flashing red with notifications from the federal registry.

"Claire..." Daniel whispered, his voice shaking. "The deed... The safety deposit box at Manhattan Trust. You opened it."

"I did," Claire replied, walking slowly toward the center of the living room. "I listened to my father’s tapes, Daniel. I heard all about the thirty-two million dollars you embezzled from Bennett Foundry. I read the fraudulent lease agreements you signed using a forged notary stamp. And I have Eleanor’s Chicago indictments from 1994."

Eleanor’s face went chalk-white. "You... you don't have that. Those records were expunged."

"Expunged from public archives," Claire said, turning her icy stare toward the woman on the couch. "Not from my father’s private vault. My father knew exactly what kind of parasites you both were from the day Daniel proposed. He let you run your scheme long enough to commit federal wire fraud, mail fraud, and grand larceny. He gave you enough rope to hang yourselves, and today, you finally pulled the knot tight."

Daniel took a step forward, his handsome face cracking with desperation. "Claire, baby, listen to me. We’re married! Anything that affects me affects you! If Whitmore Crest goes down, the Bennett name will be dragged through the mud! The press will tear your father’s legacy apart! We can fix this. We can renegotiate the trust with Evelyn. I’ll make Eleanor apologize to your mother right now! Eleanor, apologize to Margaret!"

"Apologize?!" Eleanor shrieked from the sofa. "To that pathetic seamstress? I would rather die!"

"You won't have to die, Eleanor," Claire said softly, checking her wristwatch. "You will simply have to pack your bags. You have exactly twenty minutes before the sheriff arrives to enforce the writ of immediate possession."
