Chapter 12 - The Collapse of Whitmore Crest

The rain was pouring in violent, blinding sheets over Manhattan as Claire, Harrison, and Agent Miller sprinted through the service stairwell down to the subterranean garage levels.

The concrete cavern echoed with the screech of burning rubber and the furious roar of a twelve-cylinder engine.

At the end of the parking ramp, blocked by the heavy steel security barrier that led out onto 71st Street, sat the black Bentley Continental GT. Thick white smoke billowed from beneath the hood as the automated fuel cut-off starved the twin-turbo engine, choking it into violent spasms.

Daniel was inside, slamming his fists against the steering wheel in hysterical, animalistic fury. The digital dashboard was flashing red with engine failure codes.

"Daniel Whitmore! Step out of the vehicle with your hands visible!" Agent Miller shouted, drawing his weapon and advancing behind the engine block of a parked police cruiser.

Two more squad cars slid down the ramp, their sirens flashing red and blue against the concrete walls, sealing Daniel into the corner of the garage.

Daniel looked up. Through the rain-streaked windshield, he saw the flashing lights. He saw Agent Miller’s gun. And standing just behind the police line, holding an umbrella over her mother, was Claire.

Daniel’s face contorted into a mask of pure despair. Slowly, he opened the driver’s side door. The leather-bound journal of Thomas Bennett was clutched tightly under his left arm. In his right hand, he held a black carbon-fiber briefcase containing his passport and the stolen secondary access drives.

"Claire!" Daniel screamed over the sound of the rain and sirens. "Tell them to stand down! You don't know what you’re doing! You think your father was an angel?! You think Thomas Bennett was a saint?!"

"He was five times the man you will ever be, Daniel!" Claire called back, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.

"He murdered my father!" Daniel roared, his voice cracking into a raw, ragged sob that stopped everyone in their tracks.

Even Agent Miller paused for a fraction of a second, his firearm still trained on Daniel’s chest.

"What did you say?" Claire asked, taking a step forward out from beneath the umbrella.

"Thomas Bennett didn't build Bennett Foundry alone!" Daniel yelled, rain blowing in from the open ramp grate and soaking his designer suit. "In 1988, my father, Arthur Whitmore, owned forty-nine percent of the metallurgical patents! Your father forced him out, altered the incorporation records, and left my family with zero! My father shot himself in an abandoned motel room in Newark because of Thomas Bennett! Eleanor didn't come to New York to steal your money, Claire! We came to take back what your father stole from my family twenty-five years ago!"

Claire stared at him, the rain splattering against her face. She looked at Evelyn Vance, who had just arrived at the top of the ramp.

Evelyn’s face was uncharacteristically pale. She didn't deny it. She didn't speak. She simply looked down at the ground, her jaw tight.

"Evelyn?" Claire whispered, feeling the entire world tilt beneath her feet. "Is that true?"
