Chapter 2 - The Poison in the Lace

The silence in the Caldwell ballroom shattered into pure chaos. Gasps echoed off the marble walls, cell phones were yanked out of tuxedo pockets, and security guards surged forward like a wave of dark suits.

Ethan stepped between Grace and his unconscious fiancée, his face flushed with fury. "Are you out of your mind?!" he yelled, grabbing Grace by the wrist. "You just assaulted the daughter of Senator Sterling! You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a federal prison!"

Grace didn't flinch. With a subtle twist of her forearm, she used a basic joint-lock leverage to break Ethan’s grip effortlessly. Ethan stumbled back, his eyes widening in shock.

"Look on the rug, Mr. Caldwell," Grace said, her tone icy and composed. "Before you call the police, look at what your pristine bride was holding."

Ethan froze. He looked down at the Persian rug near the base of the stairs. Lying in the deep crimson pile was a sleek, military-grade auto-injector. Its needle was uncapped, dripping a single crystal droplet onto the fabric.

"What is that?" Ethan asked, his anger wavering into uncertainty.

"It's a synthetic neurotoxin," Grace declared, turning her cold gaze toward Sabrina’s personal bodyguard, who was now creeping toward the staircase. "And it wasn't meant for you, Ethan. She was going to slip it into Lily's drink while everyone was watching the champagne toast."

A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. Senator Sterling—Sabrina’s powerful father—stepped out from the front row, his face red with rage. "This is outrage! Arrest this crazy woman! She’s making up stories to cover up an attack!"

Two heavy Caldwell guards moved to seize Grace. But Grace didn't run. She bent down, grabbed a white linen napkin from a nearby table, and carefully picked up the syringe without touching the plunger.

"Call an independent lab," Grace said, holding the syringe high for the cameras now flashing across the room. "Test this. If it's insulin or vitamins, put me in handcuffs. But if it's what I say it is... ask yourself why the future Mrs. Caldwell brought enough poison to stop an elephant’s heart to her own engagement party."

Ethan stared at the syringe, then looked down at his daughter Lily, who was trembling at the stairs. He remembered how Lily had been inexplicably sick for the past three months—frequent stomach cramps, dizzy spells, doctor after doctor unable to find a cause.

Was Sabrina poisoning my daughter all along?

Before Ethan could demand answers, Sabrina stirred on the floor. She let out a low groan, holding her shattered jaw. Her eyes opened, filled with venomous rage as she looked up at Grace.

"You..." Sabrina rasped, her voice thick and slurred through broken teeth. "Kill her..."

Sabrina’s private security chief pulled a hidden sidearm from under his jacket. But before he could raise the barrel, Grace kicked a heavy silver ice bucket off a nearby table. The bucket struck the guard squarely in the solar plexus, sending him crashing backward into the champagne tower, shattering hundreds of crystal glasses in a deafening cascade.

Grace grabbed Lily’s hand at the stairs. "Ethan! If you want your daughter to live through the night, we need to leave. NOW!"
