Chapter 1 - The Strike

The chandelier in the grand ballroom of the Caldwell Estate flickered, casting fractured light across five hundred elite guests dressed in silk and diamonds. At the center of the dais stood Ethan Caldwell, heir to the Caldwell shipping fortune, looking polished, powerful, and utterly oblivious. Beside him stood Sabrina Sterling, his bride-to-be, draped in a bespoke French lace gown that cost more than most family homes.
To the crowd, Sabrina was the picture of aristocratic perfection. But to Grace Holloway, standing in the shadows of the marble pillars in her crisp black-and-white maid’s uniform, Sabrina was something far deadlier.
Grace had spent six months serving drinks, polishing silver, and keeping her head down. She was invisible—just another servant in the vast Caldwell machinery. But beneath her humble apron was a history Ethan Caldwell knew nothing about: years of elite tactical training, black-belt mastery in Taekwondo, and a instinct for survival forged in fire.
Grace’s eyes locked onto Sabrina’s right hand.
While Ethan leaned in to whisper something affectionate, Sabrina’s fingers slipped into a hidden pocket concealed within the voluminous folds of her dress. Her movement was micro-calibrated, precise, and silent. She drew out a sleek, silver auto-injector syringe. The clear vial inside held two drops of an odorless, colorless liquid.
Grace recognized it instantly: Tetrodotoxin-B, a synthetic neurotoxin that induced heart failure within sixty seconds, leaving no trace in a standard autopsy.
Sabrina wasn't aiming for Ethan. Her cold, dark eyes were fixed on the bottom of the grand staircase, where nine-year-old Lily Caldwell—Ethan’s daughter from his late wife—stood clutching the polished oak railing in confusion. Sabrina was turning her body slightly, preparing to drop the syringe into Lily’s orange juice glass resting on the tray beside the girl.
She’s going to kill the child tonight.
There was no time to yell. No time to explain.
Grace moved.
The marble floor was slick, but Grace’s footwork was instantaneous. She crossed fifteen yards in three heartbeats, exploding off her left foot into a full aerial jump kick. Her body spun horizontally through the air, momentum coiling into her right heel.
CRACK.
Grace’s heel hit Sabrina’s jaw with devastating force.
The impact sounded like a gunshot echoing through the vaulted hall. Sabrina’s head snapped back, her eyes rolling into her head as the blow dislodged her grip on the syringe. She crashed to the floor in a heap of torn lace and scattered pearls, completely unconscious before she even landed.
The silver syringe flew into the air, landing softly on the thick Persian rug near the staircase.
Silence fell over the room like a heavy curtain. Five hundred guests froze, glasses halfway to their lips.
Ethan Caldwell stood three feet away, his jaw slack, eyes wide in absolute shock. He looked from his knocked-out fiancée to the maid standing over her, chest heaving, hair slightly unraveled from her neat bun.
"Grace?" Ethan gasped, his voice trembling with anger and confusion. "What... what the hell did you just do?!"
Grace didn't look at Ethan. She stepped directly over Sabrina’s body, her posture changing from submissive housemaid to a warrior on high alert. She pointed a sharp finger at Sabrina’s bodyguard, who was reaching into his jacket.

“Get your hands off her!” Grace shouted, her voice ringing through the hall like iron on stone. "Anyone comes closer, and you're next!"
Up on the staircase, little Lily squeezed the railing tighter, her small hands shaking, not out of fear of Grace—but because for the first time in two years, someone had just stood between her and the monsters in the dark.
