Chapter 9 - Unmasking the Puppeteer

Down in the reinforced cellar, behind ten inches of hardened ballistic steel, the world outside was reduced to distant, muffled thuds. Maya had finally cried herself back to sleep in my lap, exhausted, while Leo was safely secured in a portable cot beside Maria.

Marcus entered the safe room thirty minutes later, wiping grease and blood from his forearms.

"The perimeter is secure," Marcus reported, his chest heaving. "Six hostiles down, two taken alive. Italian special forces have surrounded the valley. No one else is getting within five miles of this estate."

Julian, having already bandaged his forehead, sat beside me on the leather sofa, cleaning his weapon with practiced efficiency. "Who authorized the strike?"

"We extracted the digital comms from the team leader's encrypted radio," Marcus said, pulling out a recovered military-grade tablet. "The wire transfer for the hit team didn't originate from Richmond. It originated from Zurich."

"Vance?" Julian asked, his voice dead cold.

"Worse," Marcus said grimly. "The authorization came from an executive account within Thorne Enterprises. Someone inside your own board of directors authorized the clearance codes that shut down our outer grid."

Julian didn't flinch, but the air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. "Sterling."

"Yes, sir. Douglas Sterling. He teamed up with Arthur Bennett and Vance. If they neutralized you and seized Leo, Sterling would have assumed interim executive control of your trust and dropped the federal investigations against Vance overnight."

I looked at Julian, stunned by the sheer web of treachery surrounding him. "Your own board member tried to have your son kidnapped?"

"Greed makes monsters of men, Claire," Julian said quietly, setting the cleaned weapon on the table and looking at me. "Richard thought he was a player in this game. In reality, he was just bait. Sterling and Arthur Bennett used Richard's obsession with you to pull me out of New York and onto foreign soil."

"So what do we do?" I asked, my voice steady despite the adrenaline still burning through my veins. "Do we hide?"

Julian looked at me, then at Maya, and then at Leo. A chilling, brilliant smile touched the corners of his lips.

"We do not hide, Claire. We fly to Zurich at sunrise. It’s time to cut the head off the snake."
