Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

By dawn, the world had exploded on the internet.

I sat at the massive oak dining table, a cup of chamomile tea untouched before me, staring in horror at the tablet Julian had placed on the table.

On the screen was a polished, emotionally manipulative video that had gone viral across social media platforms, racking up over four million views in less than six hours. It was Richard’s father, Arthur Bennett, standing in front of a sprawling southern estate in Virginia, clutching a framed picture of Maya.

*"My daughter-in-law, Claire Bennett, suffered a severe postpartum psychological breakdown,"* Arthur lied smoothly, dabbing at fake tears. *"She vanished in the dead of night, taking our precious granddaughter Maya across international borders without her father's consent. She is mentally unstable, living under the influence of an eccentric billionaire who is holding my son, Richard, in an Italian prison on fabricated charges. We beg the international community: help us bring our baby home."*

The comments beneath were vitriolic. Strangers called me a kidnapper, a gold-digger, a monster who ripped a child away from a loving home.

"They're painting me as a lunatic," I whispered, my voice trembling with rage and humiliation. "People believe him. In Virginia, Arthur Bennett is a church deacon and a bank director. His word is gold."

"Public perception is a fragile illusion, Claire," Julian said smoothly, stepping into the room. He was dressed in an impeccable charcoal suit, a crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He poured himself a black coffee and sat directly opposite me. "Arthur Bennett bought social media bots to amplify the narrative. But they made a fatal error."

"What error?"

"They assumed you were alone, broke, and defenseless," Julian said, his eyes burning with a dangerous fire. "They calculated that you would hide in terror while their lawyers bullied the State Department into demanding your extradition. They didn't count on us controlling the narrative."

"How can we control it? If I go public, Richard's lawyers will tear my character apart. They'll say I'm an unfit mother who ran off with a stranger."

Julian leaned forward, his large hand coming to rest firmly over mine on the table. The heat of his skin sent a shiver straight up my spine.

"We do not hide, Claire. At noon today, I have called a global press conference at the Thorne Media headquarters in Milan. You will not stand there as a fugitive. You will stand there as my honored guest, as my son’s caregiver, and as a mother who survived a monster. And you will show the world the truth."

I swallowed hard, looking toward the sunlit garden where Maya was chasing butterflies under Maria's watchful eye. "What if they don't believe me?"

May you like

"They will," Julian promised softly. "Because I will be standing beside you."
