Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Shadows

I woke at 2:15 AM to the silence of the Tuscan countryside—a silence so pure it startled me. For years, I had trained my brain to wake at the sound of heavy footsteps on floorboards, the click of a deadbolt, or the clinking of whiskey bottles.

Instinctively, I sat up in the plush four-poster bed. Across the hall in the adjoining nursery, Leo gave a soft, hungry squeak. I rose, slipped into a silk robe left for me in the wardrobe, and walked into the nursery. Maya was tucked under a feather duvet, sleeping with the innocence only a toddler could possess.

I lifted Leo, cradled him against my chest, and sat in the rocking chair by the open terrace doors, feeding him while staring out at the silver-lit olive groves. He drank greedily, his little eyes locked onto mine with complete trust.

Suddenly, low voices drifted up from the stone terrace directly below.

"The bail hearing was sabotaged, Mr. Thorne," a harsh, American voice said—Julian’s head of security, Marcus. "The Bennett family in Richmond has deeper pockets than we anticipated. Richard’s father pulled strings with an old contact inside the US Consulate in Florence. They’re claiming Richard was the victim of an international parental abduction."

I froze, my heart leaping into my throat.

"Let them claim whatever they wish," Julian’s voice cut through the night like a sharpened blade. "Did you secure the medical files from the pediatrician in Virginia?"

"Yes, sir. We retrieved the X-rays and emergency room intake records from Maya's previous visits. Three documented contusions over eighteen months. Claire never filed police reports, but the clinical notes are damning."

"Good," Julian responded. "Forward them directly to the Italian magistrate handling Richard's extradition request. I want Richard's passport seized permanently, and I want an Interpol red notice filed against his father's holding company if they attempt to wire another cent into Italian territory."

A pause lingered on the terrace below. Then Marcus spoke again, hesitant. "There is another complication, Julian. Richard’s father isn't acting alone. He recently signed a logistics merger with the Vance Syndicate."

Julian’s silhouette on the terrace stiffened. Even from above, I could see his fists clench at his sides.

"The same syndicate that tampered with Evelyn's medical transport?" Julian’s voice dropped to a lethal whisper.

"The very same. They know you have Bennett in custody. They view this as leverage to force you to drop your federal antitrust suit against them in New York. If Bennett talks, he might link their offshore shell corporations to illegal lobbying."

My breath hitched. Richard wasn't just a domestic monster; his family was tied to the very criminal enterprise that had cost Julian's wife her life. I wasn't just hiding from an abusive ex-husband. Maya and I had landed right in the crosshairs of an international war.

Down below, Julian looked up abruptly, his sharp senses catching the faint rustle of my robe. Our eyes locked in the moonlight. He didn't look angry; he looked fiercely determined.
