Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Vineyard

The press conference didn't just silence Arthur Bennett’s smear campaign—it decimated it.

Within two hours, the hashtag #JusticeForMaya was trending worldwide. The US Attorney’s Office in Richmond, humiliated by the public broadcast of home security footage they had previously ignored, announced an immediate federal grand jury indictment against Richard for felony child abuse. In Rome, the magistrate officially denied Richard's bail, remanding him into custody without possibility of release.

Back at Villa Fiorita, the evening air smelled of blooming jasmine and wet stone.

I walked through the terraced vineyards behind the villa, holding a warm mug of cider. Maya was fast asleep after an afternoon of baking cookies with Maria, and Leo was resting peacefully in his bassinet upstairs.

Footsteps crunched lightly on the gravel behind me. I didn't need to turn to know it was Julian.

"You were extraordinary today," he said, falling into step beside me as we reached an overlook that looked out over the darkened Tuscan valley.

"I didn't think I had that voice inside me," I said, looking at him. The moonlight accentuated the sharp planes of his face, the dark stubble on his jaw, and the subtle lines of strain around his eyes. "You gave that to me, Julian. You didn't have to put your reputation on the line for us."

"My reputation is a tool, Claire. Nothing more," he replied, turning to lean against the stone balustrade, his gaze fixed entirely on me. "What you did on that plane—saving Leo when no one else could—you gave me back my son. You gave me back my reason to live after Evelyn died."

A gentle breeze blew across the vineyard, carrying a chill. I shivered slightly, and without hesitation, Julian slipped off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders. It was heavy, warm, and smelled of cedar, bergamot, and pure masculine strength.

"You're not just a survivor, Claire," Julian murmured, his voice dipping low, laced with an emotion that made my pulse quicken. "You're a force of nature. I saw it the moment you defied Richard on that tarmac."

Our faces were inches apart. For a fleeting second, the air between us grew thick with unspoken desire, a magnetic pull that neither of us had anticipated amidst the chaos. Julian’s hand moved slowly, his thumb gently grazing my cheekbone, right where the cold wind had flushed my skin.

Then, the piercing wail of a perimeter siren shattered the night.

The floodlights across the vineyard flared red. Marcus’s voice crackled instantly through Julian’s earpiece:
