Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Future

One year later.

The summer sun was warm and golden over the rolling green lawns of our estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The grand stone mansion—the home where my father had raised me—was filled with the sounds of children laughing, jazz music playing softly from the patio speakers, and the gentle rustle of oak trees in the summer breeze.

I sat on a wide wooden lounger near the garden, wearing a simple white linen dress, sipping a glass of iced tea.

Beside me, eighteen-month-old Charlotte was toddling happily across the soft grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Mr. Harlan had given her for her first birthday.

Mr. Harlan walked out onto the terrace, holding two leather-bound folders and a warm smile.

"Afternoon, Chairwoman," Mr. Harlan teased softly, sitting in the chair beside me.

"Afternoon, Mr. Harlan," I smiled, taking a slow sip of tea. "Are those the European expansion filings?"

"They are," Mr. Harlan replied, handing me a pen. "Fully approved by the regulatory commission in London. We break ground on the new distribution hub next month."

I signed my name across the bottom line with a smooth, practiced hand.

Eleanor Vance.

My phone chimed on the table. It was an automated notification from my legal team regarding Caleb’s annual probation review request—which had been summarily denied by the federal magistrate for the third consecutive time.

I didn't open the notification. I didn't care. The man who had tried to destroy me was nothing more than a faint, powerless footnote in a history he had failed to control.

I looked out at the green lawn, watching my daughter laugh as she tumbled into the soft grass, her small hands grabbing the puppy's fur, her eyes shining with pure, unbroken joy.

There were no threats. There were no fake promises. There was no fear.

I had survived the wolves. I had reclaimed my father's legacy. And I was building a world where my daughter would never, ever have to ask anyone for permission to be strong.

I picked up Charlotte, pulled her close against my chest, and kissed her warm cheek as the golden sun dipped below the horizon, bathing our home in an everlasting, beautiful light.
