Chapter 5 - The Public Reckoning

Six months later.
The annual Vance Global Shareholders Summit was held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York. Over eight hundred investors, corporate partners, and international press representatives filled the room.
The stage was dominated by a massive LED screen displaying the company’s annual performance metrics.
The presenter at the podium, Senior Director Arthur Miller, tapped his microphone, bringing the roaring room to a respectful hush.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, gesturing toward the side entrance of the stage. "Six months ago, this corporation faced the greatest crisis in its forty-year history. Today, under the leadership of our Chairwoman and CEO, Vance Global has recorded its highest quarterly profit margin in a decade."
The audience erupted into thunderous applause.
I stepped onto the stage wearing a sharp, tailored ivory suit, my dark hair falling elegantly over my shoulders. I was calm, radiant, and completely commanding.
In the front row sat Mr. Harlan, holding six-month-old Charlotte in his arms. The little girl was watching the bright stage lights with curious, sparkling blue eyes.
I walked up to the podium, leaned toward the microphone, and looked out over the hundreds of people in the room.
"Six months ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice echoing clearly through the grand ballroom, "someone told me that a grieving daughter was worthless. Someone told me that without a man to guide her, a woman could not hold an empire together."
The room was dead silent.
"My father taught me a different truth," I continued, my voice rich with unshakeable conviction. "He taught me that an empire is not built on arrogance, titles, or stolen money. It is built on integrity, foresight, and the courage to stand firm when the storm hits."
I looked down at my daughter in the front row, offering a warm, beautiful smile.

"This company belongs to the people who build it, the shareholders who trust it, and the future generations who will inherit it. And as long as I breathe, it will never be surrendered to wolves."
The entire ballroom stood up in unison, the thunderous applause echoing off the crystal chandeliers and gilded ceilings.
