Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s Fall

The holding room at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan smelled of stale coffee and industrial floor cleaner.
Vanessa Sterling sat at the metal table wearing a orange prison jumpsuit that looked absurd against her designer highlights and manicured nails. She looked exhausted, her makeup smudged, her hands trembling as she clutched a paper cup of cold water.
The heavy door unlocked, and I walked in, accompanied by Mr. Harlan.
When Vanessa saw me, her eyes flashed with a sudden, desperate mixture of pride and terror. She tried to sit up straight, smoothing her hair.
"Did you come here to gloat, Eleanor?" Vanessa sneered, her voice raspy. "To see the mistress in handcuffs? Does it make you feel better about your failed marriage?"
I sat down in the metal chair across from her, resting my hands on the table.
"I didn't come here to gloat, Vanessa," I said quietly. "I came here to hand you a choice."
Mr. Harlan laid a thin folder flat on the table between us.
"Three hours ago," I explained, "Caleb’s defense team filed an emergency motion with the prosecutor. They are claiming that you were the sole mastermind behind Vanguard Apex Limited. Caleb is testifying that he was unaware of the offshore transfers and that you forged his digital signature on the wire authorizations."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped open. The color completely drained from her face. "He... he said what?!"
"He is throwing you to the wolves, Miss Sterling," Mr. Harlan stated without emotion. "Under the current indictment structure, if Caleb successfully places the primary forgery charges on you, you are facing a mandatory minimum of fifteen years in federal prison."
"That lying, coward bastard!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her hands flat against the metal table. "He set up those accounts! He gave me the passwords! He told me we were going to buy the estate in the Hamptons as soon as your father died!"
"I know," I said softly. "My father's forensic team has the audio recordings of the phone calls between you and Caleb from three months ago."
Vanessa froze. She stared at me, her lower lip trembling violently. "You... you have recordings?"
"We have everything," I said. "Every text, every wire receipt, every secret meeting at the St. Regis. Caleb used you as his financial shield. The moment the federal marshals stepped in, he sacrificed you to save his own skin."
I pushed a single document across the table toward her.
"This is a state's evidence cooperation agreement," I said. "You provide a full, sworn affidavit detailing Caleb’s instructions regarding Vanguard Apex Limited. You turn over the private ledger he gave you in December. In exchange, the prosecutor agrees to drop the primary grand larceny counts and recommend a suspended sentence with probation."
Vanessa looked at the document, tears streaming down her cheeks, ruining what remained of her makeup.
"Why are you doing this for me?" Vanessa whimpered, looking up at me with raw, disbelieving eyes. "I mocked you. I stood beside him at your father’s coffin and smiled at your pain."

"I’m not doing it for you, Vanessa," I said, standing up and buttoning my coat. "I’m doing it because my father taught me that when you destroy a snake, you don't leave the head alive to bite someone else. Sign the paper, or serve fifteen years for Caleb’s greed."
Vanessa picked up the pen with shaking fingers and signed her name across the bottom line before I even reached the door.
