Chapter 65 - The Cold Hand of Authority

Julian didn't look at the documents immediately. Instead, his eyes went to the window, where the rain was beating against the glass with relentless fury. "Judge Sterling retired two years ago, Vance. He has no jurisdiction to issue an emergency writ of possession on an active probate estate."

"Sterling didn't sign as a sitting county judge, Counselor," Vance said, his voice dropping into a register of cold certainty. "He signed as the designated special master for the Commonwealth Land Commission. A commission your late husband helped establish back in 1974 to settle colonial boundary disputes. Donald was very thorough, Evelyn. He wrote laws to protect himself from the peasants, never imagining those very laws would be used to evict his widow."

I stepped away from the fireplace and approached the desk. My hand did not shake as I reached out and picked up the top page. The legal language was dense, archaic, and suffocating. It cited territorial charters dating back to 1888, detailing boundary markers that had long since dissolved into suburban subdivisions—oak trees felled sixty years ago, dry creek beds now paved over by county highways. But there, at the bottom of the parchment, was the seal of the county registrar, stamped with fresh, crimson ink.

"And where is Tyler now, Thomas?" I asked, looking up into the sheriff’s impassive face. "You said you dragged him off. Is he in a cell, or have you already disposed of the boy who gave you everything you wanted?"

Vance’s expression did not flicker. "Tyler is in protective custody at the old barracks near the reservoir. He’s facing thirty counts of arson, reckless endangerment, and attempted manslaughter for what he did in the cellar. He won’t see the outside of a state penitentiary until he’s fifty. His father, Richard, is currently sitting in a federal holding facility in Pittsburgh after his offshore shell companies collapsed under county scrutiny this evening."

Vance stood up. His massive frame dominated the room, casting a shadow that reached across the desk and swallowed Donald's portrait on the far wall. "I didn't come here to kill you, Evelyn. I’m not a monster. I’m a man collecting an inheritance that was stolen with a forged signature while my family starved in the hollows. Take your clothes. Take your jewelry. Julian can drive you into town to the Grand Hotel. But by six o'clock this morning, the gate locks are being changed, and my deputies will be posted at every entrance."

"You think eighty years of my life can be packed into a suitcase in three hours?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the silence like a whip.

"I think you’ve had eighty years more than you ever earned," Vance whispered.
