Chapter 61 - The Headlights on the Drive

"Evelyn..." Julian's voice was barely a breath. "The Vance family didn't die out. Sheriff Vance isn't just the county lawman."

"He knew," I whispered, the cold reality settling over me with terrifying clarity. "All these years. The assistance, the quick warrants, the raid tonight... he wasn't protecting me. He was waiting."

Before Julian could answer, the sharp beam of headlights swept across the drawing room ceiling, casting long, stark shadows across the antique walls. A vehicle had just cleared the main iron gates—without the security guards raising an alarm.

I stood up, moving swiftly to the heavy velvet curtains and peering out into the darkness of the front courtyard.

A lone, unmarked black sedan had pulled up directly before the front portico, idling silently in the falling sleet. The front door of the car swung open.

A tall figure stepped out into the cold night air, wearing a long trench coat, stepping deliberately onto the gravel. He didn't rush. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply walked toward the front steps with the casual, terrifying confidence of a man who finally possessed the legal right to walk through the front door of the home he had waited three generations to claim.

The floor beneath us groaned as the heavy brass knocker on the front door struck the oak once.
