Chapter 35 - The Mirror of Deceit

Richard did not sit down immediately. He stood rooted to the carpet, staring at the yellowed parchment with Donald Mercer's jagged signature. The silence stretched between us until it became deafening, punctuated only by the distant hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Slowly, Richard approached the table. He picked up the adoption affidavit. His hands trembled—a hereditary tremor that I had always thought came from my own side of the family, but which I now recognized as the tragic mark of the Mercers.

"How long have you known?" he whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood.

"Since this morning," I said, watching his every expression. "Thomas kept your secret until his grave. He kept it so well that he made me believe you were my flesh and blood through the sanctimony of adoption. But you... Richard, or Donald, whichever man you are... did you know?"

Richard closed his eyes, dropping his head into his palms. A long, shuddering breath escaped his chest. When he looked up, his eyes were wet, filled with a bitter, venomous light I had never seen in him before.

"I found out when I was thirty," Richard admitted, his voice hardening. "Father had a minor stroke. He was delirious in the hospital. He grabbed my arm, mistook me for Donald Mercer Senior, and begged me not to set the orchard ablaze. He begged me for forgiveness."

"And you never told me?" I asked, feeling an old, deep wound open in my heart.

"Why would I tell you?" Richard scoffed, suddenly tossing the papers back onto the table. "To watch you look at me with pity? To watch you hand the Vance trusts to distant cousins while I remained the Mercer bastard who was allowed to sit at the high table? Father stole my family's legacy, Evelyn! The Mercers owned this entire valley before Thomas Vance hired drifters to burn our lumber mill to the ground in 1948! My grandfather died in that blaze, and my real father died a broken, bankrupt drunk!"

The malice in his tone was venomous, chilling the room.

"So that was it," I whispered, the final puzzle pieces falling into place with terrifying precision. "That's why Tyler felt entitled to this house. That's why he laughed when he destroyed my cake. That's why he threw that unauthorized gala, signed lease options, and invited predators into our vaults. It wasn't just the arrogance of a spoiled boy."

"No," Richard snarled, his face twisting in ugly triumph. "Tyler knows everything. I told him when he turned eighteen. I told him: *Everything the Vances possess was built on our family's ashes. Take it back. Take every single cent, every brick, every timber, and make that old woman watch as our bloodline reclaims what is ours.*"
