Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of Grant Whitmore

Grant finally found his voice, pushing his way through the stunned crowd of guests behind his parents. His face was pale, his tie slightly crooked, his eyes wide with sheer panic.

“Dad… Mr. Sterling—please!” Grant stammered, holding out his hands in a frantic plea. “It was a mistake! A misunderstanding! Emma just… she got overwhelmed, and Mom was upset about the necklace, and—we can talk about this inside!”

Charles slowly turned his head to look at his son-in-law. The look in his eyes was worse than anger; it was total, utter contempt.

“When my daughter stood in that ballroom, terrified, shivering, and stripped of her dignity,” Charles said softly, “you stood ten feet away holding a glass of champagne. You watched your mother tear her dress. You watched your sister humiliate her. And when she looked at you for help, you turned your back.”

“I was trying to keep the peace!” Grant cried pathetically.

“Peace?” Charles’s voice rose like a cracking whip. “You don’t know the meaning of the word. You are a coward wearing an expensive suit.”

Before Grant could answer, the Chicago Police Superintendent stepped forward, holding a tablet.

“Mr. Whitmore,” the Superintendent said officially. “In addition to the civil eviction notice being served tonight, we have received a formal complaint from Sterling Global’s legal counsel regarding corporate malfeasance, fraudulent asset transfers, and insurance fraud connected to Whitmore Enterprises.”

Evelyn shrieked. “Insurance fraud?! What are you talking about?!”

The Superintendent tapped his tablet. “Earlier this evening, automated security cameras in your dressing suite captured Mrs. Whitmore placing her pink diamond necklace into a velvet-lined lockbox inside her private safe—after publicly announcing that it had been stolen. The insurance payout claim was scheduled to be filed at 9:00 AM Monday morning.”

The color drained entirely from Evelyn’s face. She staggered backward, fainting cleanly into the arms of a terrified catering manager.

Vanessa screamed, dropping her phone as two police officers stepped forward and placed heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists, followed immediately by Richard Whitmore.
