Chapter 1 - The Ascent of Charles Sterling

The massive searchlight from the private twin-engine helicopter pinned the Whitmore estate against the winter sky like a specimen under glass. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the rotor blades shook the frosted glass windows of the grand ballroom, drowning out the string quartet and driving a sudden, icy panic into the hearts of two hundred society elites.
Inside the foyer, Evelyn Whitmore smoothed the front of her designer gown, her face flickering between irritation and rising apprehension. Beside her, Richard Sterling—her wealthy, connected co-host—frowned as he pushed open the heavy mahogany double doors, stepping out onto the frost-covered stone portico.
“What is the meaning of this?” Richard demanded, raising his voice above the howling wind of the helicopter descent. “This is a private residence! You have no right to airspace violation!”
The helicopter flared, its landing gear touching down smoothly on the manicured East Lawn just fifty yards away. The hatch opened, and a folding staircase descended.
First came four armed private security officers in tactical gear, followed by two senior partners from Chicago’s most ruthless corporate litigation firm. Then came the Chicago Police Superintendent, and finally, Charles Sterling.
Charles did not look like an aging patriarch. Dressed in a bespoke charcoal overcoat, his silver hair swept back by the wind, his eyes burned with the cold, absolute certainty of a man who owned entire industries. He stepped past the local police officers, his gaze locking instantly onto his daughter, Emma, who sat huddled in a young valet’s jacket on the stone steps.
“Dad…” Emma whispered, her voice trembling.
Charles didn't shout. He knelt beside her, his expression softening with fierce, protective love. He removed his heavy cashmere overcoat, draped it gently over her shoulders, and pulled her into his arms.
“I’m here, sweetheart,” Charles murmured, kissing the top of her head. Then, slowly, he stood up.
He turned his gaze toward the doorway of the mansion.
Evelyn, Richard, Vanessa, and Grant crowded the threshold. When Evelyn recognized the silver-haired man standing before her, the color vanished from her face so fast she looked like a corpse.
“Charles… Sterling?” Evelyn choked out, her manicured hand flying to her throat. “You… you’re Emma’s father?”

Charles stepped forward, his voice carrying across the drive with a chilling, magnetic resonance.
“Which one of you put your hands on my daughter?”
