Chapter 9 - The Starry Night

That night, the Aspen mansion was bathed in warm, golden light. The party after the recital was small, intimate, and filled with true friends—teachers, neighbors, and trusted colleagues who loved the girls for who they were, not what their father owned.

After the guests departed and the house grew quiet, Nathan carried four sleeping girls upstairs to their bedroom. Their breathing was deep, peaceful, and steady.

He tucked each blanket securely under their chins, kissed their foreheads, and whispered, "I love you to the stars and back."

"We love you too, Daddy," Emma murmured sleepily, rolling over with a smile on her face.

Nathan walked quietly down the hallway to his study. The desk was clear of frantic financial reports and emergency directives. Caldwell Systems was thriving under stable leadership, and his personal life was anchored by the most important treasures he would ever own.

He walked over to the large bay window overlooking the valley. The sky above the Aspen peaks was crystal clear, filled with millions of glittering stars stretching out across the infinite dark.

He placed his hand against the cold glass, remembering the cold, terrified night just five months ago when he had walked into the west wing and found his daughters shivering in the dark. The memory no longer brought guilt or pain; it served as a permanent reminder of what truly mattered in life.

A gentle knock sounded at the study door, and Mrs. Gable stepped inside, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea.

"You've built something truly remarkable here, Mr. Caldwell," she said softly, handing him the mug.

Nathan smiled, taking a sip as he looked out at the glittering mountain night. "I didn't build it alone, Mrs. Gable. Claire drew the blueprint, and my girls gave it a heartbeat."
