Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Counter-Attack

The morning sun reflected blindingly off the snow-capped peaks surrounding the Aspen estate, but inside Nathan’s private study, the atmosphere was strictly business.

Marcus Vance, impeccably dressed despite having flown in on a red-eye private jet, slammed a thick leather-bound folder onto the mahogany desk. Across from him sat Nathan, nursing a mug of black coffee while reviewing financial ledgers.

"She didn't just neglect the girls, Nathan," Marcus said, tapping a finger against a printed bank statement. "She was systematically draining your secondary philanthropic accounts. Over four hundred thousand dollars funneled into offshore boutiques in Zurich and Milan over the last three months alone. Furthermore, she attempted to access the Caldwell Systems R&B escrow account at 4:15 AM this morning. Our automated freeze protocols caught it instantly."

Nathan stared at the transfer logs. "She thought she was untouchable because she signed a pre-nup. She didn't realize the pre-nup contains a morality and child-welfare forfeiture clause."

"It does," Marcus smiled grimly. "Not only does she walk away with zero dollars from your personal or corporate assets, but we also have enough documented evidence of willful endangerment and psychological abuse to secure a permanent restraining order. She is legally barred from coming within five miles of you or your daughters."

"Good," Nathan said flatly. "Deliver the papers the moment she wakes up at whatever luxury hotel she checked into last night. I want her signature before the markets open on Monday."

Before Marcus could reply, the heavy double doors of the study creaked open. Four small figures padded into the room, wearing oversized fleece pajamas with little reindeer printed on the sleeves. Their skin had lost its bluish pallor, replaced by a healthy warmth after Mrs. Gable's nourishing breakfast.

"Daddy?" Emma asked hesitantly, stopping near the edge of the Persian rug.

Nathan’s severe corporate expression vanished instantly, replaced by a warm, gentle smile. He motioned with his arms. "Come here, my little snowdrops."

All four girls scrambled onto his lap, burying themselves against his chest. Marcus Vance watched the ruthless tech billionaire—a man known for devouring competing startups without blinking—melt into a doting father with undisguised astonishment.

"Mr. Vance has to leave for a little while to take care of some business with that bad lady," Nathan explained gently, stroking Lily’s hair. "We’re going to make sure she never bothers our family again."

"Are we going to stay here?" Sophie asked, her big eyes looking up anxiously. "Or are we going back to the big city?"

"We stay right here," Nathan promised, kissing the top of her head. "In fact, I'm clearing my entire schedule for the next three months. No meetings, no flights, no boardrooms. Just us."

Lily gasped. "Really? You won't have to look at your glowing rectangle phone all day?"

Nathan laughed, holding up his phone. "I am turning this phone off right now. Watch." He held down the power button and slid the device into his desk drawer, locking it.

The girls cheered, clapping their hands together. For the first time in six months, the mansion felt truly alive.

Later that afternoon, Marcus returned with the signed legal papers. Vanessa Caldwell—now legally reverted to her maiden name of Vanessa Sterling—had signed under protest, realizing that fighting Nathan Caldwell in court with frozen assets and federal fraud investigations looming was a losing battle. She had packed her designer bags and caught a private flight back to New York, disgraced and defeated.
